Obituaries
« on: Sunday 16 October 11 22:35 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I have a relative Samuel Sims who died aged 30, 16 Feb 1859 at Georges road, Heaton Norris am trying to find an obituary to hopefully find his parents. He was born in Stockport and his occupation listed, on death,as a 'beerhouse keeper'. I have been unable to find any marriage record to wife Alice Birch, born Heaton Norris c1828. Any ideas please on where I can look for this info.
Regards

Hello and welcome to rootschat ;D ;D

I can't see a marriage for them either - but I did come across this thread from a few years ago here on rootschat which you may find of interest

Could this be the baptism of their son Samuel

name:   Samuel Sims
baptism/christening date:   01 May 1859
baptism/christening place:   Christ Church, Heaton-Norris, Lancashire, England
father's name:   Samuel Sims
mother's name:   Alice Sims

and the daughter Rebecca mentioned in the other thread..

baptism/christening date:   01 May 1859
baptism/christening place:   Christ Church, Heaton-Norris, Lancashire, England
father's name:   Samuel Sims
mother's name:   Alice Sims

The baptisms are both after Samuel's death in 1859 - and are at Christ Church, Heaton Norris - both on same day so perhaps they were older children when they were baptised rather than babies.

If they were baptised at christ Church - perhaps that is where Samuel was buried?
According to genuki the church did have a graveyard.

Stockport Heritage library has the Stockport advertiser and another newspaper

Death notices are usually disappointingly brief though

Hello Milly,  Thank you for your replies. I followed the link to Rebecca  and she is Alice;s daughter, they were together up to the 1891 census. I new nothing about Rebecca. Alice remarried in Aug 1860 to Samuel Gibson and Mary b1847, Samuel b1850 Rebecca b1852 were all on the 1871 as Gibson.  Thanks also for the christening details, we will probaly never know why they were not ch. until they wre 9 and 7. Mary is a mistery too as I have not found any birth/chr. record.  I will keep looking for details of Samuel Sims born c1828. Again many thanks,
Regards, p.s. I like the cats!

Here's something for you to look into..

How about if Samuel married someone called Bridget Barlow in 1845...and then married a widow called Alice Bowers in 1849 ...while Bridget was still alive!!

Bridget Barlow and Samuel Sims Stockport Dec 1845 19 276

Alice Bowers and Samuel Sims Leeds Dec 1849 23 514

Now - if Alice's maiden name was Birch when she married Mr Bowers that would explain a lot!!

Here's a newspaper article from Manchester Times - under the heading of Stockport..

For some reason - Berkshire Record Office appear to have some records on this - but it looks like he was found guilty.

Search samuel sims here... http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/

Samuel Sims
Chester; bigamy; guilty. [Berkshire Record Office, Miscellaneous Unofficial...]

Might be worth a look to see what punishment he got and whether he would have been free to return to Alice to have children with her.

There is a possible Alice Birch marriage to a Charles Bower Manchester Sep 1845 20 577

which might be a possibility.... (although it says Bower and not Bowers).  Plus you would also need to find a death for any husband before 1949.

I can't see Charles and Alice Bower(s) in the 1851 census

If the theory is correct then...Mary Sims as seen in later census born 1847 would be before Samuel and Alice met.

I can't see a birth in 1846/7 for a Mary Sims/Simms - but there is a Mary Bowers born in Stockport in 1846 - who I can't see in later census.  It may explain why you can't find a birth ref for her under Sims.

Do you have any birth certs for children Rebecca or Samuel?
