Civil Registration Page Numbers - now with picture!!

Hi

I have this birth

Richard Edward Blackmore
Jun Qtr 1888
Vol 4a
Page 12a


I believe this is what the page number (12a) looks like on the microfiche, the number(?) in question is only half the size of the 12, which is why I can’t match it to a number – but to the letter 'a'. Is it possible to have an ‘a’ page number?? I haven’t come across it before. I don't really want to order the certificate without knowing is an 'a' page is valid.

Hi Tara,
I have ordered a couple of certs where sometimes a number is difficult to read (*) .
I would just order the birth as you have most of the info Full name, qtr, vol and page 12* you must also include the district, they will not send you a cert with a different name, also if you do know who the parents were just tell them that too and they will only send you the cert if it has  those check points.

Hi,

This is good advice.  12a is not a valid page number,  and unfortunately 1888 is a year not yet well covered for births on FreeBMD,  so you can't check it there.

Treat it as 12*.

Thanks to Skippy I now have a picture of the entry of interest

I still think it is an 'a' and so does Skippy

The volume is definitely 4a (sorry Skippy) as that is the Vol for West Ham.

just wondering what people think? Your opinion for the 'a', against, other suggestions and why an 'a'??

Hi again,

It definately looks like 12a to me.   ???

I transcribe for FreeBMD and I have checked the rules for page numbers,  they say that letters are allowed as they are sometimes found in page numbers.  

However, I would still treat it as 12* as if you specify 12a and this is incorrect,  the index sometimes is,  they will not send you the cert.  They will accept 12* as valid and will check all the pages in the range,  it is only 10 pages.   ;D
