Photo for dating please (OLLIS, FRY)
« on: Friday 21 October 11 12:41 BST (UK) »
Dear All.... This is a photo taken outside a pub in Bath which was in business from at least as early as the 1840s until 1955.  The man in the centre of this group, with the angled apron, I am told, is a carpenter called Mr FRY who had a business nearby (the only one I could find on the census had been born in 1847 but this may not be him) - I imagine the other men are probably some of his workforce. The pub landlord is possibly the man on the left, holding two trophies. I am hoping he is a member of my family, two of whom (father and son) had the pub between the 1860s and 1889 or thereabouts.

Unhelpfully, this is a copy of a copy so I have no useful information about the original such as size, material or photographers - sorry!

Any suggestions most gratefully received.... many thanks!

Regards, Karen

I couldn't give an accurate date Kate but I would think this was taken between the 1860's and 1889.

Hi...

Thank you.... that was what I was hoping someone would say :-)  It would be nice if an expert in male dress could pin down a date though since I have no idea if the landlord (who I am GUESSING is the chap on the far left) if father (George) or son (Thomas). They both died in 1889. I know I am probably asking the impossible since men were hardly the arbiters of fashion whereas (particularly young) women could focus a date quite sharply.

Thank you for responding!

Regards
Karen

I am wondering, if a prize - the trophies - has just been won if there would be anything in the local paper at the time?

Is it a trophy Kath or is it a jug and glass, the one in his left hand certainly looks like a glass.

The Gent on the left appears to be holding a china mug.....could this be a Cider Pub as it was taboo to serve cider into a glass for some unknown reason.

I forgot to ask what is the name of the pub/inn?

Hi Bilge,I think it's a jug of something alcoholic and he has a glass in the other hand.Saves him going back to the bar ;D

It seems to have a spout on the side nearest the glass for pouring.
