baptism 1877 at Stow on the Wold

Hello.

 I am seeking the baptism entry of Robert Brookes ( may not have an 'e' in it, nor indeed an 's'), in 1877 at Stow on the Wold.

 He is not shown in the civil birth indexes , but there is a Robert Briggs shown there ( March quarter 1877) .

Robert Brooks is shown in the 1881 census (age 4) with his grandparents in Stow, and born at Stow. I think he was illegitimate and was booked in the civil lists as a Briggs to confuse the issue. But I hope that he was baptised a Brooks.

There is no sign of a Robert Briggs in the census nor in the burial indexes.

Is there anyone out there that has access to Stow Registers and who may be able to help me.

The birth registration in March qtr 1877  Stow on the Wold is for Robert John Briggs, he died the same quarter.

freebmd has the birth wrongly transcribed as Stow on the Wold it should be Stow, Suffolk the same as the death

Cant help with the baptism - but have found the family in several censuses to get a wider picture of who his parents may be

looking on the face of it as son of Laura when she was 16, or of Annie.
But birth cert would confirm.

There IS a Robert Holdaway around in Stow on the Wold in 1881 ...hmmmmm.... but I wouldnt like to make any definite conclusions as that might be very unfair to him. He is a hawker, married and age 63 (RG11 2563 15 25). Maybe he has a son who knew Annie!

Thanks for you help, greatly appreciated.

I checked up on the Robert Holdaway and discovered in the 1881 census that there was a Coldstream Guardsman in London aged 19 who had been born at Stowe, looks promising, as you say the certificate may help.

I cannot find him in the free bmd's but there were two entrys who may have been his brothers.

Unless Robert's birth cert or baptismal record mentions a father, then it is pure speculaltion as to who he was.

I wouldnt name anyone for definite, it is hardly fair. It could be anyone - maybe his mum just liked the names Robert and Holdaway. Or maybe Robert Holdaway and his wife were particularly good to her during the difficult time, and so she named her son after him. Cant 'blacken' his name by saying he fathered the child without more evidence.
