Eiver Monaghan & Mary Ann Shiel(d)s
« on: Wednesday 26 October 11 11:50 BST (UK) »
I have discovered the surname of Eiver's wife, previously only had her as Mary A from English census. They married on 26/8/1877 in Meigh roman Catholic church, Killevy, Newry.  Moved to Liverpool soon afterwards as their first son was born in Q4 1878 there.

I have not been able to find a birth/baptism for either of them - confused as Eiver gave 2 different birth places on 2 censuses - Armagh in 1891 and Scarva Co Down in 1901.

Grateful for any help, tips anyone can give me.
Thanks
Andrea

Scarva isn't that far from Armagh (city) so it's possible he was from somewhere in the area but not having an exact location will make it harder to find any possible church records for him. What are the residences of bride and groom on the marriage certificate? what are fathers' names and occupations?

That was quick!
I don't have the marriage certificate, yet, just the basic record. Do you know if I order from rootsireland.ie that I will be able to see fathers' names etc. or would I need to order the actual certificate.

thanks
Andrea

Fantastic :D
Many thanks.

Makes a lot of sense as first 2 children were called James and Daniel.

Wonder if this is any connection@
"The Will of James Monaghan late of Aughintaraghan County Armagh Farmer and Inspector of Newry Canal deceased who died 26 July 1881 at same place was proved at Armagh by Neal Lamb of Newry and Bernard Rodden of Tandragee Merchants and Anne Eliza Monaghan of Aughintaraghan Widow all in said County the Executors." Will (5 pages long) mentioned wife and children (I skimmed through most of it) but on page 4 mentions uncle Eivor Cassidy-

It might well have, the place name rang a bell and when I look at my notes I see that Eiver's second wife Mary Loy(e) came from Aughantaraghan (spelling form the 1901 English census).

Just had a quick look and it mentions 'Sheals Farm' perhaps Mary Ann brought a farm with her into the marriage?
and money left to 'my son Eivor' (£20 only  - 'which I consider sufficient, having already advanced him in life').

Will trawl through it for names of other children.  So far it seems  very good match - many thanks!!

Hi,
In the Griffiths Valuation (1864 for Co. Armagh) in the Townland of Aghantaraghan (sic) there is a farmer James Monaghan listed. There is also a Daniel Shields sen and a Daniel Shields Jun renting farms. It is of note that the Newry Canal passes through this townland.
