Hampson family - Runcorn watermen

I'm a Hampson and a direct descendant of John Hampson (b 1805) and Alice Booth of Runcorn mentioned by several others. I was also born in Runcorn.

Parish records are a way to get further back and my research has indicated that John was the son of William Hampson, a weaver from Warrington and his wife Mary.

I've made the same deduction in my research.  Can you tell me if you've found a connection between William Hampson of Warrington and Richard Hampson?  In my tree we've traced back to Richard Hampson and Mary Roylance.  They married in 1800 in Liverpool and had their children in Runcorn in the same time period that your John Hampson was born in Runcorn.  We feel that Richard's children and John were cousins, but we haven't been able to find Richard's parents. 

There seem to be 2 main Hampson lines in Runcorn - William's line and Richard's line.

Have you made a connection between them?

Just to confuse things further, the parish records of Lymm have the following:

William Hampson (c 1775?) married Mary Perrin 3 Jan 1793 Lymm (both living in Lymm)
William had a brother Richard  who married Hannah Perrin

This would be a different Richard Hampson to the your one (who married Mary Roylance). I have Roylances living in Runcorn (but born in Great Budworth) in a completely different part of my family tree at this time!

We've wondered if Richard married twice and this is the same person.  I can't remember where we got with that line of thinking.

Don't think it can be the same one, because the Lymm registers list Richard Hampson & Hannah Perrin as the parents of a couple of children in 1798 and 1800.

Our Richard married in 1800.  I think we had wondered that if Hannah Perrin died in childbirth, he may have remarried quickly to have a mother for the kids.  Since there were no census records, we don't know how many children were in the home.

If I remember correctly, we've determined that the chances are slim that it's the same person, but it's possible.

Richard Hampson & Hannah Perrin have a child Richard in Lymm in 1798 and then Sarah Hampson is christened in Runcorn in April 1800.

Richard Hampson marries Mary Roylance 19 March 1800 in Liverpool

Richard Hampson & Mary have a child, Hannah Hampson born 25 Jun 1800, christened 3 Aug 1800
 (followed by Mary, Mary Ann, Sarah in later years).

If these are all the same man, he was a very fast worker, on a par with the later Robert Owen Hampson

Gosh, I was surprised (and pleased!) to see some recent replies to my original post!

Ceratonia - you might be interested to know that the name Owen was given to Robert Owen Hampson as his mother's maiden name was Jane Owen, the daughter of William Owen, a Master mariner from Frodsham, Cheshire.

I have a contact who has done literally years of research about our Hampsons and she tells me she's pretty sure that the birth she's found for William Hampson who married Mary Perrin must be correct - 16/9/1770 - Bowdon -William- son of Charles and Ann - of Hale.  This ties in perfectly with his date of death  in 1822 aged 52.  Residence, Stockton Heath, Buried Grappenhall.  Bowdon is about 4 miles east of Lymm
