Bradbury's in Disley
« on: Monday 21 June 04 21:11 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for a John Bradbury, born about 1804 in Disley, plus any of his relatives.  This John Bradbury may well have a married a Hannah Butterworth in the same area about 1824 or just before.

If anyone can help, I'd be grateful.

Hi Fiona,
I do not know Cheshire but I do have the BRVI on which I found this entry. I have looked on my map and Disley and Rainow do not
appear to be too far apart to be in the same Parish. (why are the places you are looking at always on the crease??)  I thought you amy like to see it and decide for yourself. This person does have siblings if you require them. Kind Regards, Frances

Hi Fiona
A search of Cheshire Parish marriages for Disley and the mother church Stockport St. Mary do not show any marriages between a John Bradbury and a Hannah Butterworth, can I ask why you think he may have married her, and do you have any census records. OR details of children ?
There is an entry in the 1841 census for Disley which shows

    HO 107 / 108 / 15 Field House Disley

John Bradbury  53  slater                  born in county
Hannah   ~       55                             ~      ~    ~
Marion     ~       21  cotton weaver    ~      ~    ~
William    ~       28  slater lodger       ~       ~    ~
Mary        ~      36                              ~       ~    ~
Samuel    ~       1                               ~       ~    ~

don't know if this is yours or not. Parts of Disley come under the Derbyshire registration district, so this couple may have married there.

hope this helps

Hi

Thanks for your trouble.  John Bradbury was a reed maker (for looms) in Salford by 1825 when his eldest daughter, Frances, was christened in Manchester Cathedral (Collegiate Church).  Subsequent children christened there only show that he had become a porter by 1836.  In the 1851 census and the 1861 census, he and his wife Hannah and children are listed: he gives his place of birth on both occasions as Disley, Cheshire, and by these times was a Banker's clerk.  He is 47 and then 57 in each census, and Hannah is 4 years younger.  They probably married before she reached 21.

In the 1861 census his mother-in-law is listed as Sally Butterworth (born in Yorkshire).  Hannah was born in Lancashire - actual place is indecipherable at the moment, so a Disley marriage is a bit of a long shot.

Manchester and Salford were such melting pots during the 19th century that people came from all over.  Although John was born in Disley, his family may have come from further afield (although probably not far from Bredbury, Bradbury is such a Manchester surname).

Hope this helps

Fiona

I have also noticed that there is will for a Sarah Bradbury, widow of Disley, in 1825.  I wonder if she could be John Bradbury's mother?

At the moment, I don't have any other evidence for a Rainow connection but I'll keep an eye out.
