John Basaraba 1897d completed
« on: Wednesday 09 November 11 01:31 GMT (UK) »
From infomation I have my grandfather John Basaraba arrived at the age of 14 from Chortovets ( also possibly spelt Czovtowce) Galicia Ukraine. He arrived with his parents in 1897. The father`s name was Stefan but I am not sure of  his mother`s name and would also want to know if there were any other siblings. After arriving to Canada the family settled near Gimli Manitoba ( possibly Komarno Manitoba).

I am not positive, but this Ivan calls himself John later in life...so may have been Jan Ivan? The father is listed as Syman, however...Was he married to Catharina LUPYCHUK?

There was a son Stephan born to Fedora MUSZENZKA in Gimli, 1904! She was two decades or more Syman's junior...

Here they are in 1906 keeping up with the son having more children! My grandparents were having children alongside their parents from Bukowina as well...! Prolific bunch.

Finally found a marriage that may fit... in Feb. 21  1903 Gimli - for Iwan BASSARABA and Katharina LUPYCZUK
a late registration for Anne 1906 has them in the R.M. OF KREUZBURG

Nicola / Nykola Basaraba took over  SE 35  township 49 range 23 -W2 after the death of Seman Basaraba
he also owned lands in twnshp 50 & 51 nearby  http://www.saskhomesteads.com
They are in Sask. now?

Hey there,

Don't know if this helps but there is a Peter Basaraba deceased in Sept 2011 parents Harry and Petronellia  born in Pine River, MB (Not sure where that is  :) )

There is a Olenska Basaraba here:

http://www.ourroots.ca/page.aspx?id=545076&qryID=9fff6bdb-5bda-4295-a371-aeb30d64ce41

There are 9 Basaraba obituaries in total listed in the Saskatoon Star Phoenix...oldest one is a Frederick died in 1965...

Makes me wonder...

Jeff

Yes, I wondered if it was just similar names, and it could well be, I just haven't found the parents or other siblings of his in 1911 yet...Perhaps someone can find them in 1916
There is another marriage in  KREUZBURG...Nicholas BASARAB to Anna KUZ  Oct 12/1918
One in Mossey River Demitro BASARABA to Maria MOMOTIUK Feb.6/1921
( also a death of a Pariaska BASSARABA Dec. 24 1929 age 47 in Mossey River but doesn't match Symon's daughter)

Semen is also showing on land grant records as NW 2  township 29  range 21  -W1 but that is near Dauphin and there were other Basaraba there, and would Symon have moved North at his age??
Here are Manitoba Western land grants for several with the names of siblings but again, looks to be the Dauphin bunch...all except for your man, John Lloyd Basuraba

There is a death for a Sam ASARABA oct.16 1930 in Ethelbert age 84...so perhaps he did move further North after all as I saw no forenames close to Sam/Symon of his age in the 1901 1906...( one a little younger in Marqette) Perhaps someone will spot the family in 1916 and solve their whereabouts post 1906...His land description numbers match Rural Municipality of Ethelbert!
Township 31 in ranges 18, 19 west of the first meridian and Winnipegosis, Municipality of Massey River
Townships 29, 30 in ranges 19, 20 west of the first meridian and Hamlet Fork River
Townships 29, 30 in ranges 21, 22, 23 west of the first meridian and Ethelbert Village
Township 28 in ranges 21, 22, 23 west of the first meridian, Rural Municipality of Ethelbert

Just found out that KREUZBURG is now called Fraserwood, so near Komarno / both near Gimli.
Ethelbert is Northwest of Dauphin...

Besides Annie, it looks like there are late birth registrations with this mother for a Mary, Jessie, and Polly.

You can check for yourself with this index to the Manitoba Vital Statistics. You can also check for marriages and deaths. I just put in the last name .... I didn't look a every birth so there may be others.

BTW, MB is the abbreviation for Manitoba  :)
