Aust Census after 1848
« on: Wednesday 09 November 11 12:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, you have kindly helped several times before and I am back, hoping someone can look up a family on the first Adelaide SA census after 1848 because of ---

My Gr Gr Grandfather Carl Gotthardt KRONCKE and his wife Maria emigrated here to Aust in 1848 from Germany on the Alfred. They were accompanied by sons Richard b. 1832, Johann Heinrich b. 1836 and 1 or 2 unnamed daughters all born in Germany, according to which shipping list one consults as apparently no official shipping list survives. I am trying to find the names of these 'missing' daughters.

Their first child born in Aust was Heinrich b.1856 in Kensington SA and the rest were born at different locations across SA

Hence my idea (good or bad) to try and find them on an Adelaide Census after 1848, or am I heading in the wrong direction?

Thanks in advance

Info from Australian censuses has not been kept, only statistics, up until the one before last, and they have a 100 year embargo anyway.

Electoral rolls are the next best thing.  Hopefully someone with S.A. connections can look for you.

Passenger lists into South Australia are almost non-existent, as the government of the day didn't bother keeping them.   Sometimes a record will be found in a newspaper.  Or they may be mentioned in the BRSA (Biographical Records of South Australia) which some RC people have access to.

Good luck!

Oh I thought the full details were kept, as you see on the TV show 'Who do you think you are'.

But electoral rolls surely wouldnt contain the names of children?

Perhaps you were viewing a program with research in the UK :)

Electoral rolls list the details of eligible, enrolled voters who until 1973 had to be 21 years or over.

Actually the Biographical Index of South Australia 1836-1885  Gleaned from research from the SAGHS in archives, public records, privte papers, letters of admon as well as contributions from individuals.  There are errors and omissions but an excellent resource.

This would obviously the Mrs HARAY [should be HARDY  :-[] mentioned in BISA

Details of her marriage with ages...unfortunately not all the available information is detailed on the online subscription based website.

HARDY William Harrison  25 years Status Single  Father George HARDY
KRONCKE Mary 18 years  Status Single  Father Carl KRONCKE
9 Jan 1879
At the Registry Office, Redruth                        Bur 118/276

According to the above marriage entry Mary was born c1861, however there is no entry on the birth index.

Quote
Their first child born in Aust was Heinrich b.1856 in Kensington SA and the rest were born at different locations across SA

Mistranscribed birth but I don't see any other births registered to this couple in South Australia.

Birth

Have you approached the Lutheran archives.

Thanks, Andycand and Ennael I already have that info.

Hi Cando. I will try the Passenger Lists although one can contradict the next

Quote
KRONCKE Carl born c1809 Hamburg/Hanover, Germany
Died 5 Feb 1890 Kooringa SA
Arrived 1848 on the ALFRED
Lived at Burra, Redruth, Kooringa
Married to Mary born c1819 Germany
Children 2 sons, dau, Mrs HARAY

Carl's marriage to Mary (Maria) Dechow b.1819 was his second marriage.

His first marriage to Maria Bringmann (who died in 1848 in Germany) produced 3 children Richard, Johann Heinrich and an unnamed daughter. Carl married his second wife and with their 3,or 4 children (depending on what shipping list one follows) came to Aust in 1848, quite a busy year it seems.

It's the unnamed daughter (or two) that I'm trying to name

Mrs Hardy (Haray) my Gr Granmother, was born in Wirrabara SA 13 years after they emigrated

Ive tried the Lutheran Archives
