Missing Madderns!
« on: Wednesday 09 November 11 19:01 GMT (UK) »
My great grandfather Thomas William Maddern born 1865,St Just Cornwall, 1891 living in Arlecdon Cumberland was a miner. He married 1886, and shortly afterwards (family gossip says) went to S Africa.  By 1901 census his wife Mary was a widow.

His son John Thompson Maddern born 1887 was supposed to follow in his father's footsteps and died of a fever shortly after reaching S Africa.

I have no more information about either of them.  Any idaes of where and how to look would be appreciated.
Thanks

Found this..

              UK incoming passenger list
ship = Guildford Castle
Port of departure = Delagoa Bay, Mozambique (which upon gogling is East Africa)
port of arrival =Plymouth,  London
date of arrival = 2 July 1914..............................
Maddern, Thomas aged 24, miner
Last place of residence = Union of South Africa
Residence of permance = England

Interesting - although can't be him as it is 1914 and you say he died before 1901

thought I would post in case you can see a connection or something.

will keep scouting
Ellis, Coll, Ward, Toovey, Tait, Stone, Fowler, Stephenson, Dry, Townsend, Walters, Grainger,

Will see if i can find him in the family. i suppose many Cornish miners went to S Africa and the Madderns were originally from Cornwall.

Many thanks.  Help is appreciated as I am stuck!!

Thanks.  This ties in with the information I had from the family.
William found, just his son to go.
I am very grateful for your help.
