Looking for information on James Elliott (policeman - constable) who married 1861 in Killucan, Ireland (not sure where he was born - but he went to London as he had a child born in Highgate 1863. Any help would be appreciated as to where I could search Irish and London police records, thanks Alison

I have just been able to confirm that James Elliott was born about 1840 in County Longford, Ireland and he was definitely a policeman - his father was Thomas Elliott. Now need to focus on County Longord but don't have any additional information ............. Alison

Do you have the 1861 marriage record? May give some more details to pinpoint birth areas. Also what church did James belong to?

Was he in the RIC before moving to England. If so getting his RIC record May help to identify a birth/residence location.

Just received marriage certificate 29 January 1861 - no further clues - marriage church of Killucan, Westmeath, United churches of England and Ireland - another certificate says birth County Longford

Also received Victoria Police (Australia) file - no birth date but confirmed as Ireland - but does say that he was in London Police for 4 years 3 months and discharged 17 May 1867 - family came to Australia August 1867.

The document also says Ireland police 5 1/2 years - that suggests dates of 1858-1862(3)

If he served in the police in Ireland then it’s most likely that he served in the RIC (there was also the Dublin Metropolitan Police Force). Copies of RIC service records are held in various locations. One option is to order a copy from the PSNI Museum in Belfast.

Note that in the RIC you had to have served 7 years before you could marry, and that you would not normally be posted to a county where you or your spouse were born or had close family.

If he also served in London, then again there was more than one force but by far the biggest is the Metropolitan Force. I’d start with them

Looking at the RIC index for a likely James Elliott only turns up 2 neither of which are likely.
1.James Elliott age 19 on enlistment native county Longford enlisted 1854 Note says Emigrated to USA
2.James Elliott age 20 enlisted 1855 native county  Fermanagh Note says Y for married and D for died 1864.
Nothing else showing for an enlistment c. 1857/8
