Hi akc

Just adding link to previous post www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,530201.0.html

One of the big problems you have and which Carole mentioned in the other post is not knowing where Robert Jnr was born c. 1887.

The lack of a marriage so far for parents might indicate that his parents weren't married which is likely to complicate trying to find him the earlier censuses.

Did both his marriage and death certs give the same info on his parents? What occupation was given for his father Robert Snr on his certificates?

I can only see one Robert Sharp on the census transcriptions with an occupation connected with the railway/surfacing. He shows as born in Closeburn, Dumfriesshire c. 1855. He is married from 1881 to a Margaret (she may have been married previously with a step son in the house?). The family show as living in Blackwood Village, Closeburn between 1881-1901.

This Robert looks to likely be the son of a William Sharp and wife Christina. The 1891 census has this entry, for I think, given the info, the same Christina:

Christina Sharpe 76, pauper
Christina Sharpe 18, grandchild
William Sharpe 11 grandchild (pauper)
Robert Sharpe 7 grandchild (pauper)

Address: Blackwood Village

I think this Robert Jnr shows in Ayrshire for 1901, boarding, occupation a fire clay worker. What was the occupation of your Robert (mind you, 13 years later might have no bearing).

Can't see much else so far, akc  :-\

Hi both  :)

He's down as an Ag Lab on his marriage cert. Living Holywood.

I think he's a ploughman working for an Adam Beattie in Closeburn on the 1911. Aged 25 and b. Closeburn.

This would fit with the 1891 entry in Blackwood Village, Closeburn -that Monica has found

In 1861 ~
Kirkpatrick village, Closeburn

William Sharpe, 52, plate layer
Christina, 47
Isabella, 8
Robert, 6
Joseph, 4
Marget, 1

All b. Closeburn

Interesting birth entry for 1884 -

17 July 1884 Blackwood Village, Closeburn
Robert Sharpe s/o Robert Sharpe, plate layer and Margaret m.s. Grierson

He's not with Robert and Margaret in 1891, so probably the one with Christina

robert was the informant

I'm wondering if he had always lived with his grandmother

Wondering about this family as Robert Sharpe, snr, surfaceman, b.c. 1855 died in 1926 - 12 years after robert, jnr, married.

Have been following up Isabella Sharpe, aged 8 on the 1861

In 1881 she is staying with her sister, Margaret, and husband George Murray in New Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire. With her is one year old William Sharpe, nephew to George and Margaret and b. Closeburn - probably Isabella's son and the one on the 1891 that Monica has listed.

Isabella died Closeburn on 24 Sept 1884 of Phthisis. Her brother Robert was the informant. The Robert, jnr, that I found was born 17 July 1884

Just putting 2 and 2 together and making about 60  :-X

All great info, gnu  :)

A couple of queries with the info we have so far, but really, pretty close match you would think.

Always going to be a question mark with the family isn't there, without being able to see a link to Margaret Grierson  :-\ akc, is there anything with Robert Jnr's children's names that might help or give some additional clues?

I assume there were no further clues from witness names from the marriage cert in 1914 which is a pity!

More like 4 and a half which is great and much closer than we were before!
