Brookwood Asylum
« on: Monday 14 November 11 20:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have recently found out that my relative died in Brookwood Asylum in 1918 and am interested to find out more about her.

I know that the records are held at the Surrey History Centre but am unsure whether I am likely to find out much as the records are likely to be closed for 100 years.  Does any one know whether I am likely to obtain any information about her - ie date of admission etc or whether absolutely everything is closed?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Good evening KPM,

It's always worth a try no matter how unlikely it may seem, you probably know already but here's a link anyway; http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/sccwebsite/sccwspages.nsf/lookupwebpagesbytitle_rtf/contacting+surrey+history+centre?opendocument
And another; http://www.exploringsurreyspast.org.uk/themes/subjects/mental_hospital_records/brookwood_hospital_woking

Good luck John915

Many Thanks John

No harm in asking the question.  I'll contact Surrey History Centre and go from there.

Their online search facility is pretty good and they have a lot of material listed in detail...
You can search on the link John Gave

Hi KPM, earlier this month I went to Woking and looked at the records of my grandfather that died there. You will have to apply to look at the records. I hope you will be as lucky as me. Poppyann

Thanks Poppyann

Did the 100 year closure rule apply to your Grandfather's record then??

Yes, but as I was close family in my case it was allowed. I phoned Woking and they sent me forms to fill in I sent them off and they agreed to it. My grandfather died in 1929

Thanks for letting me know Poppy.  So perhaps as she is not so closely related to me, I may not be so lucky, but no harm in trying.
