I ran an address search on the 1841 but no Pen y Ffridd (or anything like) coming up. However, this is most likely:

1841

Pen Cefn, Festiniog
HO107/1427/3/28/13

Cadwalader Jones, 30, quarryman
Anne, 30
Anne, 9
John, 4
Morris, 1
All b. County

This is same person as on the 1851 at Pen y Ffridd and is only  2 households away from the Pierce family of Bwlch wa that I gave in Reply # 8

In 1861 they are at Pen y Ffridd
RG9/4324/26/24

Cadwalader Jones, 50, slate quarryman
Anne, w, 50
Morris, s, 21, slate quarryman
Cadwaladr, s, 15, slate quarryman
William, s, 12
Sarah, d, 10
Elizabeth, d, 22, housemaid
All b. Festiniog

The letter would have been written circa 1861 because of the death of Evan in that year.

I presume these are the Ffestiniog Papers to which you refer:

Thank you again! :)
The letter was written by Anne on behalf of her father. She said, "Do you still preach, Sion bach?" I guess she was about 3 years older, so called him little John(?)

Cadwaladr Jones of Pen-y-ffridd, Ffestiniog, Merioneth,
Dates of creation: 1838 - 1891

He must have lived to 80.

But... how do I find his parents?  Or siblings?  Are his parents Jones, or is his father John someone? Presumably Ffestiniog baptisms around 1810, anyone called Cadwaladr and then look for siblings Margaret (1814) and Anne (mentioned in the letter as his youngest sister).  As you said, not a lot of Merioneth online.

I'm not sure about sources for Ffestiniog parish records - probably Dollgellau Archives. However, if the family were Congregationalists from early on, their baptisms wouldn't appear in the Established Church records.

You could contact Gwynedd FHS:

http://www.gwyneddfhs.org/

and see if they do searches. you'd probably be charged a small fee. FHS are feeling the pinch at the moment.

Although the Ffestiniog Papers suggest an end date of 1891, I can find no death reg in that year.  He is still with his  family at Cynfal Terrace in 1881. However, by 1891, Ann is recorded as a widow and Arthur has become household head. The papers were 'created 1838-1891' so that might well be from when they were begun to when they were brought together. Though I see that the  diaries have an end date of 1891 :-\

1891
Cynfael Terrace, Sun Street, Festiniog
RG12/4645/20/15

Arthur Jones, 44, Slate miner
Ann, mother, widow, 80
Elizabeth Edwards. serv, 19, domestic servant
Robert Williams, brother, 41, slater and plasterer, b. Bryn Eglwys, Denbs. (I assume that he is really brother in law)
Sarah, sister, m. 40
William, nephew, 15, slater and plasterer
Mary, nephew(!!), 12
Edward, -do-, 8
Annie, -do-, 5
Robert, -do-, 3
All but Robert Williams born Ffestiniog
All recorded as speeaking Welsh only

There are two possible deaths for Cadwaladr - Sept q, 1886, Festiniog, aged 77 and Mar q, 1885, Festiniog, aged 74

Added - by 1871, the two Penyfridd houses are occupied by a Lloyd family and a Hughes family

Maddie, thanks for that. Only you'll have to bear with me here. I tried googling these and honestly don't know what they are...

St Martha was an anglican church - worked that out. Was it the only church in the early days?
A google of GASD ffestiniog brings up gas bottles.  Government archives?
BTs = no idea. Banker's trust. Burial tract. Birth time (a very accurate period in records!)

It's like a text message from my daughter.  :)

National Library - for all of these i'd have to go to the national library at Aberystwyth?
Gwynedd FHS I would pay for them to search for me?
