Why not email Cambridgeshire Archives, they hold the parish registers:

http://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/

1826 stands out for the number of 'consents' if you look at your CD you will see what I mean.

Perhaps if you explain this to them and how puzzling it is (and where you live) they may look at registers/give an opinion.

Chrissie, The original parish registers are in the Cambridgeshire Archives, and not at Soham, so unless you wish to visit there for another reason you will gain little by going. I have looked at Phillimore's Atlas & Index of Parish registers and it says the registers are preserved from 1538, there are no funny notes about missing parts or Bishops' Transcripts only either, so it should all be there and solve your puzzle.
