Winchester Ricquier family
« on: Thursday 17 November 11 15:36 GMT (UK) »
John Ricquier and his family lived in Winchester in The Square in 1841-seeHO 107/409/6 page38.He had sons and daughters whose baptismal names in Latin may be found in family search under Ricquier(Hampshire). His daughter Mary Ann married Henry Reeves in 1835 and one of their sons was named Linus. In the 1861 Census Linus is found in the household of Edward Ricquier in Alton and is said to be his nephew-RG9/704/70 page17.However in the long list of baptismal names, dates of birth and christenings referred to above , this Edward Ricquier's name appears to be absent .He died on 10 Feb 1880 in Alton, aged 58, which indicates he was born about 1822.He married Mary Ann Thomas in Winchester on 16 Apr 1843.I presume that his marriage certificate would disclose the name of his father. I guess Linus was living with his uncle and aunt at that time because his father had died in 1856 and an elder brother was doing a carpenter's apprenticeship. Ihave yet to find out where his mother was at that time.

Yes, the marriage cert will have a space for name of father. Hopefully it will give you that info, unless he was illegitimate and then it may be left blank. Or he may make up a father so it isnt!

benrita,

I too had a look at the census of 1861, and saw that family of Edward and his wife Mary, and the nephew Linus Reeves. I also saw there the names of Edward's children, so did a little digging in the local newspapers and came up with a few articles which may help a bit. There is just the one entry about Linus Reeves.

The Hampshire Advertiser (Southampton, England), Saturday, July 01, 1865; pg. 7; Issue 2183. 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.

Hampshire Midsummer Quarter-Sessions.
Charles Ricquier, soldier, charged with stealing 264 pieces of metal, valued at £5, the property of a William Curtis, at Alton, on the 16th November 1864-four months,

The Hampshire Advertiser (Southampton, England), Saturday, July 25, 1868; pg. 2; Issue 2343. 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part I

Edward Ricquier draper’s assistant, and Thomas Brown, apprentice to an engineer, were seen running away from a fire which had started in the furze behind the grandstand at Southampton racecourse. Both men were taken into custody and charged with setting fire to the furze.
Both men were later released on bail, the case against them could not be proved.

He was in trouble again in 1869 for throwing a stone at a cab.

ALTON .
Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle etc (Portsmouth, England), Saturday, February 6, 1869; Issue 3806.

Presentation: A few days since the teachers of the Alton Congregational Sunday School, presented Mr. E. Ricquier with a handsome gold watch and chain as a mark of their esteem for his indefatigable exertions as secretary during the past ten years. The gift must be exceedingly gratifying to Mr. Ricquier, who has, during his connection with the school spared no exertions to carry out his functions with credit to himself and satisfaction to all.

The Hampshire Advertiser (Southampton, England), Saturday, October 09, 1880; pg. 6; Issue 3581. 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.

In this article which is about Alton, an Edward Ricquier, is praised posthumously for his work that he carried out as librarian of the mechanics institution-he had recently died.

ALTON, MAY 3 .
The Hampshire Advertiser (Southampton, England), Saturday, May 03, 1884; pg. 8; Issue 3953. 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.

ALTON-May 3
Concert: A successful concert was given by the Alton Choral Society at the Assembly Rooms on Thursday evening, the 24th ult. The programme was sufficiently varied. The first part consisted of sacred works of Handel, Mozart Hadyn, Mendelssohn & Rossini. (There follows a list of the songs sung, the soloists etc)  Then comes this sentence “Mr. Linus Reeves presided at the piano, and deserves the warmest thanks of the society for his invaluable services during the season”

The Hampshire Advertiser (Southampton, England), Saturday, December 17, 1892; pg. [1]; Issue 4854. 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.

This article inserted into the above newspaper by solicitors acting on behalf of the late Edward Ricquier of Alton:

RICQUIER: WANTED , the address of Mary Ann RICQUIER, the widow of Edward Ricquier, late of Alton, or one of her sons, Edward and Ralph Henry Ricquier,  Information to be sent to Messrs. Bowker and Son, Solicitors, Winchester.

Just wonder if you are aware that a 5 year old Henry Reeves, son of Henry Reeves a carpenter, of Water Lane, Winchester, was subject of an inquest held at the St. John's tavern on Friday October 8th, 1869 by the coroner, J H Todd Esq.

I can give you full details if you want them, by PM maybe.

Hi Tom Piper As a descendant of John Ricquier, I am very grateful to you for your thorough research.  I was unaware of the death and inquest on Henry Reeves on October 8, 1869.  I would welcome details of the inquest.  However, as a beginner I am not familiar with the PM procedure.  From my records, Henry's father may have been John Henry Reeves, carpenter, living at 2 Westgate Lane, in the 1871 Census. John Henry died, aged 56, much to my surprise, in the County Lunatic Asylum, Fareham on 11th May 1897.  The informant on his death certificate was his son John of 87 Wales St.  The Post Office Directory of Hampshire 1875 re: Alton also indicates how talented Edward Ricquier and Linus Reeves were-the former being a Registrar of Marriages and the latter a professor of music.  With regard to Ralph Henry Ricquier, draper's assistant, he was born in 1849, married Clara Lucy Perry in 1892 and died aged 88 - see GRO Index MAR1938 Staines 3a 29.  Probate of his father's will was granted to him in 1892 at Winchester.alt+s

bennita,

Well that is quite a bit to work at, but it does make you wonder what happened to Mary Ann Ricquier to cause a solicitor to put ad advert into a County newspaper asking for her whereabouts.
