Family crest for Fatherley
« on: Saturday 19 November 11 15:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to find a family crest for the name Fatherley.

Every name under the sun seems to be out there, but not this one.

Any ideas?

Unless an individual, named Fatherley, was granted a coat-of-arms, there won't be one! :(

Even if you find a crest, it only "belongs" to the individual concerned, and his direct male descendants.

My crest is (I believe!) safe to use, because the owner's line went extinct a few hundred years ago!! ;D

It is a popular misconception that the word 'crest' describes a whole coat of arms or any heraldic device. It does not. A crest is a specific part of a full achievement of arms: the three-dimensional object placed on top of the helm.
There is no such thing as a 'coat of arms for a surname'
. Many people of the same surname will often be entitled to completely different coats of arms, and many of that surname will be entitled to no coat of arms. Coats of arms belong to individuals. For any person to have a right to a coat of arms they must either have had it granted to them or be descended in the legitimate male line from a person to whom arms were grantedor confirmed in the past.

Burke's General Armory, a collection of some 60,000 coats of arms from England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, has no listing for Fatherly.  The closest he notes is a coat of arms for Fathe.  (I know of some bucket shop heralds for whom this would be "close enough,", and they'd be happy to sell you a picture of the Fathe coat of arms with the name Fatherly placed below it.)
