One ancient family of the Corca Laidhe are the Meg-Fhlannchaidh, now Clancy or Mac Clancy. O'Donovan wrote in 1849: "The  property of the Mac Clanchys was confiscated after the rebellion of 1641, but their name is the prevailing one in (Leitrim) the barony of Dartraidhe, or Rossclogher, to the present day." Their genealogy is in Appendix B of this book:
http://ia700302.us.archive.org/7/items/miscellanyofcelt00celt/miscellanyofcelt00celt.pdf

You might also find this book of interest:
Historical Notes on the Ancient Sept of Clancy/Glancy by Maria Clancy
http://www.clancyhistory.com/clancy-book.asp

If you are inclined to submit to a DNA test you might find yourself genetic cousins to persons named Coffee and Driscoll consistent with the ancient genealogies. Consistent is a key word because I don't want to imply proof when I say that one Clancy already tested does share ancient ancestors with some o'Driscoll and o'Coffey. Therein lies my interest in the Clancy and I hope in time we can define the DNA signature of the ancient MacClanchy, see http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Corca_Laidhe/
Cheers,
Colin

Fantastic, thanks for the reply. I have been debating doing a Y chromosome surname test for some time. I also bought this amazing book last year, I found it absolutely fasinating. Really looking forward to the book coming out on the Kinlough area and its many (incl. MacClancy) families later this year. I'm currently looking for these items which apparently have info on MacClancy family:

- Land Index Registry of Deeds (maybe at 'www.landdirect.ie'):
  Leitrim Vol 25 (1811-1820) & Vol 57 (1739-1810)
  Donegal & Sligo Vol 41 (1821-1825) & Vol 42 (1826-1828)
- Royal Irish Academy:
  Deeds of Roscommon 1812 M24 & M35
- National Library Ireland:
  Leitrim estate rental
  Donegal poll of electors 176
  Annual Irish Catholic Directory

Hi Aaron,
The Indexes to Registry of Deeds records are on LDS Film; see http://home.wavecable.com/~colin/genuki/CAV/Deeds/Townlands.html
http://home.wavecable.com/~colin/genuki/CAV/Deeds/Grantors.html

An online index in progress is here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~registryofdeeds/index.html

Once the memorial number of interest is found in the index you can find the memorial on Film.

Landed estate rentals are here:

Electoral Registers 1837-1838 with some Roger Clancy in Sligo. He appears to be a dealer of some sort on New Bridge Street

This family is strikingly similar to ours only Thomas would have to be Peter Clancy of Kinloughs brother.

Hi Aaron,
I have found a 12 marker DNA test reported here:
www.familytreedna.com/public/IrelandHeritage/
kit: N49150, name: Clancy, ancestor: Philip Clancy, b.c. 1868, Killavoggy, Ireland

According to Goggle maps Killavoggy is only 6.6 km from Killanummery
Cheers,
Colin

Have assessed my DNA results through Family Tree DNA. My 37 point test first gave me the result that I was descended from Niall the ancient ruler of Ireland from whom the O'Neil clan is descended and 1 in 12 Irish people. However, after digging through the results and many Irish names I found a close link (genetic distance of two) to three Clancy men and there is a 88% chance we share a common ancestor within the last 300 years. One of these men is 'Willie Joe Clancy' who according to the book "Historical Notes on the Ancient Sept of Clancy/Glancy by Maria Clancy" is descended from James Murragh MaGlannaghy, Chief of Darty who was beheaded in 1642 after a rebellion against the English. They are from the Glenade region of Leitrim/Sligo however.

Much of the Clancy lands of Darty in the north of Leitrim ended up with Cahir Clancy & Mary Fitzgerald (nee Crofton). Cahir was the son of Melaghlen McGlanchie (aka Maelsechlainn) who died in 1603 and left the Darty lands to him. The Doongarbry castle & lands were taken when Meleghlen conquered Teige Og Maglancie in 1590. Cahir became protestant and made a deal with English forces for peace and probably his own legal title to the Darty lands. However their only successor was Catherine (Isabel) who inherited the castle, lands and town of Doongarbry, Tullaghan, totalling 4,000 acres around the parish of Kinlough and Loch Melvin around 1640. This was eventually divided up between families like the Whites, Windsors & Johnsons among others. Perhaps the family was divided amoung the various regions and whether they remained there between 17th century to 19th centuries remains a mystery lost due to the religious persecution of the Catholics of Ireland.

Slight update on Irish roots: Daughter of Peter & Bridget was Elizabeth Clancy who married John Clancy 26 Nov 1896 at Kinlough RC, the son of Peter Clancy & Kitty McGowan most likely in a desperate bid to keep the family farm in the Clancy name. John first took ownership of the 4.3 Ha Clancy property with a house on the banks of Loch Melvin in Derryherk. When John died 17 Mar 1920, age 72 in Derryherk the farm was in Elizabeth's possession and changed hands to Charles Kerrigan on 13 Jun 1928 and in 1957 to Thomas Kelly who turned the old house into an Office. Records are scarce around so recent of such events so if anyone in Ireland could help we would be excited to get in touch with any family in Ireland and around the world. This information would not have been possible without the help of Maria Wootton (nee Clancy), author of Historical Notes on the Ancient Sept of Clancy/Glancy.

Aaron, a few Clancys have turned up on my wider family circle however they are from Glenade, (both Aghamore and Drummans). They may be connected but there is a book on all Clancy families in the area.
