Christmas Evans (Ystradgynlais) or the family of ...
« on: Wednesday 23 November 11 14:32 GMT (UK) »
In the 1891 Census, a member of my Hambrey/Hambury family, John Hambrey (b Blaenavon c1867) was lodging with a widow, Elizabeth Evans (b c1856) in Ystradgynlais.

He subsequently married Elizabeth in 1897 yet by the 1901 Census had "renamed" himself John Hambery WILLIAMS - I have no idea why as, to my knowledge there are no "Williams" names associated with either himself or his wife at or before 1901.

I have found Elizabeth Williams in the 1911 Census at Brynawel, Ystradgynlais, listed as a widow - yet I'm having problems finding a) a death for John "Hambery" Williams between 1901 & 1911 and b) what happened to the family following the 1911 Census.

The 1911 Census shows Elizabeth with her son CHRISTMAS EVANS (b Cwmbach c1876), daughter Deborah Williams (b Cwmbach 1882), Deborah's husband George Williams (they married in 1908) and Daniel Jones aged 86, father of Elizabeth.

I wonder if anyone has any knowledge of this family as I am at a dead end.

I have headed this topic Christmas Evans as there may be more of a chance of finding out some more info.

Thank you
Richard

1871 census - was Ruth age 29 John's mother???

If so he is lodging with her in 1881 - where she is married to Richard Good

1891 I think it is William Goode (not Gorde) age 16 who was visiting - he was the son of Richard Good(e) and possibly Ruth -so he could be John's half sibling

Yes .. suz - that is the census

Elizabeth is also on the 1911 for Ystradgynlais Lower as widowed

And yes, that is the same family in Blaenafon ... and William Goode was indeed a half-brother

Thanks
Rich

what surname did john use when he married??

Have you noticed in 1901 when Elizabeth apprears married to John -she has the middle initial "H" ??

I wondered if maybe John's father was a Williams?? -and maybe John started using a dauble barrelled name?????

There is a Williams family next door in 1871 - but Williams is not an unusual  name - especially in S Wales ???

Am trying to establish what name his death reg may bein??

He used Williams as his name for the marriage

I am assuming that the "H" in Elizabeth's record is for Hambrey as in every other census and her two marriage records there are no middle initials

I actually never thought about his father being Williams

Ruth Hambrey had two children out of wedlock, one dying a year before John's birth

This poses a further question ... my very large "Williams" family were in the vicinity of John's illegitimate birth around that time and beyond

I wonder if anyone will turn up with links to this family
