« on: Thursday 24 November 11 10:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi, l wonder if sks could give me some advice as to how l can gather more info on a Alfred Charles(or Charles Alfred) TAPLIN who according to the 1911 census was a Met police officer, he was born Portsmouth c1882 and at time of 1911 census was living in St Pancras with wife Rosina and children.

Any help or guidance would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Robert, are there Police archives? That would have info surely, if it exists.

Robert - the National Archives have some Met Police items, but I think most is elsewhere. This is a link to TNA's page "Looking for records of an officer in the police force":
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/policeofficer.htm?WT.lp=rg-3120
There are further links on there to the Met's site, as well as to an in-depth guide.

There's also a podcast on TNA of a talk on this subject from June 2011. You can either play from the link or download:

worth following up the lead check out The Black Sheep Index. I cannot publish the link as rootschat is blocking it.

Have a look at the Police Orders website, they have a database of Met. Police Officers. The Black Sheep reference indicates he was in Y Division and his collar number was Y624
