Gunner Samuel Foxall RGA
« on: Tuesday 29 November 11 18:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm trying to locate the Army records/Pension records of my Great Uncle Samuel Foxall, 133475, 118th Siege Bty., Royal Garrison Artillery who died on The 12th September 1917. Samuel is buried in The Huts Cemetery in France. I'm not holding out very much hope because I've located his medal rolls & have found his entry on the UK soldiers who died 1914-1918 via Ancestry. I understand that only 30% of army records survived and those would appear on the Ancestry site. I've found his fathers army records (also Samuel Foxall) but unfortunately not his sons. Does anyone know if there's any other way I might be able to gain more information on Samuel? ??? many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

The CWGC site at least does give his mother's address and initials, or are those intials his father's as was the custom of that time. Son of Mrs. M. B. Foxall, of 10, Fenton Low Cottages, Stoke-on-Trent.

Unfortunately that information is incorrect. That was infact his wife - Mabel Brandon Foxall. His mother was Mary Jane Foxall. Sam & Mabel married on the 14th Dec. 1915. I've actually been in touch with CWGC site today with a view to having the information amended. They require a lot of paperwork to back up our information but hoping to have all paperwork in near future. Appreciate your help.

hi francesanne

it looks like the best you can hope for is to find as much info as possible regarding the 118th rga if you do a google search for it one site that comes up is this www.1914-1918.net they have an extract from the war diary of the unit but the piece that,s online is dated from the 17th sep 1917 so just after  your Samuel died but have a look anyway ,also it,s worth while having a look at the site , the great war forum  , there are numerous sites dealing with ww1 specifically .

Hi

Quote
When was he born

The reason I asked about his birthyear is that there is a WW1 record for a Samuel Foxall aged 37 but he was married at the time of enlistment to a Mary J  (nee Tomlinson) and had a number of children

There is another entry but he was unmarried when he enlisted in 1916

I really shouldn't post so late at night. I'd forgotten to give you Samuel's date of birth. I believe it was 1894 but have requested birth certifcate from GRO yesterday and hopefully I've got the correct person. The Samuel Foxall you discovered was in fact his father. He lied about his age & was actually around 45 years old. His wife was Mary Jane Foxall (nee Tomlinson). Thanks very much for your help.
