I've got a Payne too (ouch) that might fit from St Albans,
John Payne was born 1847 at St Albans Herts.
In 1851 he is aged 4 and with his father Joseph and mother Maria and brother William 14 and sisters Elizabeth,Harriet,Sarah,Mary and Charlotte living at the Grove,St Michaels Herts.
In 1861 he is aged 13 and with his father Joseph and mother Maria and four sisters Elizabeth (married name Webb),Sarah, Charlotte and Maria.
In 1871 he is a railway porter aged 23 unmarried lodging at Copenhagen St Finsbury.
In 1871 Mary Ann Twitchin aged 18 is a kitchen maid unmarried at Shakespeare hotel Hanover Square
In 1874 John Payne married Mary Ann Twitchin at Marylebone ref 1a 76.
In 1881 he is a provision porter aged 33 with wife Mary A and daughters Ethel M 2 and Maria 7m
In 1901John Payne  53 Herts St Albans Middlesex Hornsey Porter In A Provision Warehouse with
Maria Payne  20 London Marylebone Middlesex Hornsey Dressmaker Assistant.

Hi Joboy

Don't think our family trees will link up, at least for several generations!  As far as I've got they were all in Watford/Rickmansworth area.  Do have a Joseph/Maria couple but they were married 1808 (St Albans) and their children were all born Watford 1809 - 1827 (no John)!  Their son Joseph married Nancy, so no place there to fit you in.  :(

Hi Jim

Thanks for the PM.  Will email the ancestor part of doc. later today.

Regards to you both

Hi Jim

Forgot to say I looked for your White family and found 1891 CR Thomas' wife was Margaret born Limerick.
Marriage @ St John Limerick 15/1/1863 Thomas White to Margaret Brown

Fathers given as Thomas (sic!!) White and John Brown.

There were children named Margaret (1870c) & John (1866 c), so that part fits nicely.

Thank you -

I did also find out that my cousin Crispin had a family tree on ancestry.co.uk which explains the line from Isaac White, his sons were Thomas and James where Thomas is my direct line, I did not know there were 2 sons.
Which means the story about our relation to the Newbury coat tailor Isaac is true.

Hi Jim

Glad my find didn't spoil your story!  :D

Usually some truth in family oral tradition, even if it gets a bit muddled along the way.

So have you got your Whites' details back to Isaac now?

Yes history back to Isaac is ok now - however the interest broadens to pursuing even further back  - not easy with so many with the same surname :) - but used to being patient !!

My father kept talking about the family White name originating from scottish sheepdrovers, he even had to take scottish sword dancing classes which he really hated   ;D
I think perhaps that this was wishful thinking or at least having to go back a few centuries.

I found some information on the Whites - but am still working to link the two  - it does however point in the direction of Wales rather than Scotland going far back.
The first archive mentions the Thomas White moving from Hampshire to Berkshire, the second archive lists up the different branches of White families in England -
