Thanks, Emmeline, what would American Express have been in 1930, before credit cards - was it a bank?
A possible   brother was working for Brown & Shippley on Wall St at the time, but much higher up the job ladder.

Hi ABoyd

In the 1850's A.E began as a freight and valuables delivery service.

Banks placed a high value on this  secure and reliable delivery.

1890 -  America Express decided to compete with the banks they serviced by issuing money orders and soon the
company expanded into London, Paris, Antwerp and Berlin.

These were the early days and in 1950 A.E issued their first credit card and in 1966 their first Gold Card.

Just a potted history ABoyd - no doubt they would have had plenty of chauffeurs to drive the big-wigs around   ;) ;)

Hello Everyone,

Please forgive us for this off topic intrusion, as you will see I (we, that is Anne & Lou ) have only just joined up to this wonderful Rootschat, after researching this afternoon on the one time Actress ( & Gaiety Girl ) Madge Hodgkinson & have been enthralled by Emmeline's efforts in this area.

Confession time, Anne is related to Emmeline & I love things like this, researching & old photo restorations etc & as Emmeline was shown on here this a.m. we hope that she sees this effort & maybe we can join forces etc Anne has been showing lots of photographs of a "younger" Emmeline shall we say !

By the way were you aware of this Photograph of Madge in the National Portrait Gallery ?

Do get in touch, if you can, We would be delighted to hear from you.

P.S.
Anne has been thrilled with the photos of her Mum that you posted ( & I have copied, hope you don't mind) as her Mum destroy so many photographs during her illness (Alzheimer's)
