*COMPLETED*GODDARD Bapt c1743 M.Lavington ?
« on: Saturday 10 December 11 14:57 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Could somebody PLEASE help ?
My direct ancestor, JOSEPH GODDARD, married Anna Maria Smith in 1784 at Woodborough (Bride's parish).
On the Marriage Licence Bond it gives JOSEPH's parish as Market Lavington.
They had children also at Market Lavington.
Eventually JOSEPH was buried there in 1818.

JOSEPH's year of birth is given as 1746 (marriage) & 1740 (burial).

Can anybody PLEASE locate his baptism ?

I've found a possible in Ogbourne St Geo (s/o Moore & Mary 1762), but the date is wrong (although the age would be more likely).
Another possible in Brinkworth (s/o John & hester 1744), but some distance away.
Another possible in Chippenham (s/o Thomas & Martha 1743), but some distance away.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
THANK YOU & kind regards, Alan.

Have you tried expanding your search years, ???   not all children were baptised as infants..... some families did "block" baptisms whereby several children were done at once.

Hello Patrish,
                     THANK YOU for your reply.
Yes, I've widened the search from 1738 - 1784 on all the online sites that I can find, but no positive result.
One other JOSEPH (bapt 1777 s/o Thomas & Mary at Milton Lilborne), but he appears to have been born around the time of baptism.

I'm still searching.
Kind regards, Alan.

Its possible that he was not baptised, :-\  did he have any siblings that you have found to see if their baptisms appear anywhere.

Where there any witnesses on the marriage bond that might give you a clue  ???

The 3 you have found are there any names that appear in his children, that can often be a clue but not always.

Market Lavington and Woodborough were both civil parishes within the Devizes registration district from 1837 .

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/devizes.html

The previous 3 you found do not appear there but Milton Lillebourne does.

Did it give Josephs status on the marriage bond, he was considerably  older than her

I have not been able to trace a baptism either, I think your best bet is to do another post, to see if anyone has access to Wiltshire parish records, using that as a heading to draw attention to it specifically, linking this one, or get in touch here, they might be able to help you

Hello Patrish,
MANY THANKS for your useful suggestions.
In answer to your questions :-
1) Haven't found any definite siblings so far.
2) The only witness on the Marriage bonds appears to be the bride's Father.
3) Out of 5 children found (and aside from Joseph & Anna Maria), I'm left with Joanna, Hannah, & Mary, in that order.

JOANNA being the firstborn could well be a clue.

However, the only Joanna Goddard I can find giving birth to children during the period 1738 -1770 in Wiltshire, is EDWARD GODDARD & JOANNA READ married 1754 and residing in Cliffe Pypard. They have a steady flow of 9 children 1755-1767, but no JOSEPH.

4) Joseph's age according to the Marriage Bond in 1784, is given as 38 (as you say, considerably older than the bride), but still status given as BACHELOR.

It's a bit of a mystery !
Thanks again for your help.
Kind regards, Alan.

No Goddard baptisms at Market Lavington until 1786 - that's a Joseph, son of the Joseph you are seeking info on.

Any chance the Goddards were Quakers? That was a strong outfit in the Lavington area.

Hello Museumman,
                              Thank you for your reply.
I suppose it's possible his parents may have been Quakers, although I obviously have no prior knowledge.

OK, does anybody know where might I find Quaker Baptisms for Market Lavington area c1735 - 1770 ?

Thanks and kind regards, Alan.

My ancestor is also Joseph Goddard Bn. 1746 in Market Lavington. d.15 oct 1818 in Easterton.
Married to Anna Maria Smith.
I can trace Anna Maria back further but like you I am stuck with Joseph.  No siblings, no parents,
I wondered if you had got anywhere since your last post.

I have got a very large tree, I wonder if you are on it.
