Identification of Regiment Please
« on: Saturday 17 December 11 04:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi

This bloke is supposed to be an Australian who joined up in 1940 in Australia, I have my doubts.

Could I please have an identification of his regiment if possible.

Cheers

That's a Royal Artillery cap badge, Bob, but the uniform looks like WW1 not WW2

If this man is indeed an Australian, and I see no reason to doubt it since the Australian and British artillery cap badges were virtually identical, then he is a member of "A" Battery, RAA, since they are the only artillery unit in the Aussie Army who wear the white lanyard. That distinction was awarded to the unit in recognition of their service in the South African and First World Wars. That alone would indicate that the photo is post 1918.
Cheers,
Bill.

The tunic is a 1922 pattern one  :D

Thank you very much gentlemen.  Like I said initially I had my doubts about the 'family story' about this young man.   That leaves two scenarios I think.  Firstly the lad joined up between the wars and was issued a 1922 pattern uniform (any idea how long they were in use?) or it was some lad 'dressing up' for a photo in an old uniform.

This photo was in a box of old family photos so we are assuming he was part of the family. ???

Any comments gentlemen?

They were in use up to 1940, but i would have expected to see collar dogs on a later time framed one.

I dont think this is a dressing up picture ;)

Thanks for that.  I am now trawling the family tree looking for obscure cousins etc. and checking to see if they served in the RAA, so far no luck :-\

will post details if I find a likely candidate.

Cheers

Well I am as sure as I can be that I have identified the young man.  Gunner Hector Ernest McLeod Royal Garrison Artillery #182956.  The MIC appears to be the only thing surviving.  Hector Ernest married in Australia in 1932 and died in 1979 aged 81.

A couple of questions spring to mind gentlemen, given that he was born c1898 it would have been late in WW1 when he joined up so is it possible that that type of uniform was in use before the end of the war?  And, if so, given that it is not an Aussie regiment, would the white lanyard have been in use?

Cheers

Hi Bob,

I just noticed that you list in your research interests 'Pearson - Yorkshire' and that you have one of the coats of arms for Pearson as your user picture.
Are you related to the branch of Pearsons that originate from the Worksop/Dinnington area by any chance?

My GGrandfather was Henry Garbutt Pearson b.1880.

Kind Regards,
Matt.
