You may have to remember that Jane was possibly illiterate (she made her mark) and therefore it may well be that the surname was written as she said it  :-\ and that the actual spelling of the surname may bear no resemblance to that shown in the register.  Any accent or impediment she might have had would further muddy the waters.   Not a lot of consolation I know, sorry.  :'(

And the person who wrote down what he thought she said might have been from out of the area and not yet tuned to local dialect.

I wonder what was a similar name in the same regs a couple od decades earlier?  Different clerk... different mistakes :D ::)  In seriousness though, such a search may give some clues.
