John SHERWOOD - Peasmarsh 1800s
« on: Thursday 22 December 11 21:48 GMT (UK) »
Is there any chance of finding out if John SHERWOOD remarried. His wife, Hannah WRIGHT died in April 1807 in Peasmarsh. They were married in November 1789 in Guestling. If so, to whom and did they have any children. John Sherwood is the father of Maria Ann Sherwood of "Granny Smith" fame and is my gr gr gr gr grandfather (I think that's right). I do not know exactly when John died. Thanks

Hi Karen,

Is there any reason you think he may have remarried?  The closest (both geographically and in time) on the SMI is the following marriage:

Place: Salehurst, East Sussex,  Date: 13 Feb 1811
Subject: John SHERWOOD
Spouse: Sarah FUNNELL,
Witnesses: FOWLE Rich.; HEATHFIELD Jn.

But, Salehurst isn't exactly next door if you see what I mean!  And there is nothing to suggest that this one is a widower.

However, I do think this one was a labourer and had two daughters - so if yours definitely wasn't a labourer - that would rule him out!

Sorry - not very hepful.  :'(

Hello Karen

Welcome to Rootschat :)

From the Sussex Marriage Index,Extra Info,it seems John & Hannah at the time of their marriage were Travellers.

I know from discovering my Husband has 3 lines of Travellers, their Children were Baptised in various Parishes .

I will have a look around .

Kind Regards

Thanks so much for your help. I have recorded that John was a labourer. Sarah's name has cropped up before but unconfirmed.
Interesting to hear that they were travellers. My info states that their first child was born in Guestling then the rest were born in Peasmarsh - actually I meant baptised, I don't know where they were born.
Is anyone able to look up children of John and Hannah SHERWOOD with names and baptism dates?

Once again, thanks so much for your help. These dates are great, especially the burial of John Sherwood himself and his age. I have on my list a Jane Sherwood - but not sure if she belongs to this family or not. Her bapt date is 1808 - a year after Hannah died. Any clues on that one?

Hello Karen
I am directly descended from Sarah Sherwood baptised Iden 19 April 1810, the daughter of John and Sarah Sherwood of Peasmarsh.  I have been researching for years and years and have never managed to find out much about this family.  But like you, I think that John Sherwood remarried after the death of his wife Hannah in 1807 and that Granny Smith and her relations are therefore half-kin.  Tempting as it is, I don't think that Sarah Funnell can be John's second wife, as the first child of John and Sarah was Jane Sharwood, baptised Peasmarsh 22 May 1808, almost 3 years before the Sherwood/Funnell marriage.
