D'ARCY Genealogy
« on: Wednesday 23 June 04 15:14 BST (UK) »
Hello

I'm researching the history of the D'Arcy family of Hyde Park, House, Killucan, Co. Westmeath, Ireland who came from Dunmoe (Dunmow) Castle outside Navan, Co. Meath Ireland and originally from Platten, Co. Meath, Ireland.

The family moved from Lincolnshire, England in the 14th Century.   At that time Sir. John D'ARCY was Chief Justice of Ireland.

In the 11th Century (1066) Norman D'ARCY accompanied William the Conqueror to England and fought with him at the battle of Hastings.  Norman D'ARCY is a descendant of the Dukes of Normandy who ruled Normandy during the 10th and 11th Century.  Normans grandfather was Richard II, (The Good, Le Bon), The fourth Duke of Normandy who was also grandfather to William the Conqueror.

I have most of the early history but am missing some links from approx 1733 in Hyde Park, Killucan, to c1880 also in Killucan.

Any assistance or advice gratefully accepted.

Damian D'ARCY

hi Navan
have you tried
The National Archivist
http://www.nationalarchivist.com

or documents online?

there are many trees that include a sir john D'arcy online, by inputting his name on a search engine. :)

Hello

Thanks to both Jaq and Kazza for the advice.   Much appreciated as I'm new to this forum.

To Jaq
I note that your family crest is Lawrence (possibly also spelt Laurence)
Just an interesting extract from the info I have concerning one of my ancestors.

William D'ARCY , Kt.  (father of George D’ARCY) was born between 1440 and 1475.
He was Vice Treasurer of Ireland in 1523.

He married first Margaret ST. LAURENCE  who was born between 1440 and 1475.
She was a daughter of Christopher ST. LAURENCE , 14th Baron of Howth and relict of Cruise of Drogheda.

(Howth and Drogheda are both in Ireland)
Do you think that these Laurences may be related to your LAWRENCE?

To KAZZA

Strangely enough I have almost a complete line from the 10th Century up until the early 18th Century (1733) due to the fact that the name is unusual.
From that time (1733) I'm missing about three or four individuals up to 1876 when my grandfather was born.  I can however tie them down to a particular house near to Hyde Park, Killucan, Co. Westmeath, Ireland.   (Corbetstown House).  I hope to fill in a few blanks during a visit to Ireland during July/August.  I'm living on the continent at present but originally from Ireland.

Regards

Damian :D

My great great grandparents lived and worked on the D'arcy estate in Killucan, William and Anne Somerville from County Cavan. This couple and their family lived in the Gate-Lodge of the estate, William being the coach driver. In 1883 William Somerville was also the local Summons Server. He had been tipped off that some rebels were planning on burning down the D'arcy House on the estate. William reported this and some of the local men were arrested. Shortly afterwards however, a group of men kicked in the door of the gate-lodge and beat up William Somerville. They then dragged him, his wife and his youngest daughter, to the banks of the Royal Canal and threw him in fully clothed as his wife and daughter looked on in horror. As he surface e was hit across the head with a Barge pole and sank beneath the water, never to come out alive. He is buried in the local churchyard. This story was told to me by the granddaughter of William Somerville.

Hello Martin, just wanted to make contact. William and Anne Somerville are also my great grandparents. My grandmother is burried not far from Anne's grave so I visit it each time I'm up there. Maybe we could link?  :)
