Did he serve in WW1?

Hi there. Hope you are all enjoying the Holidays!:)

I was very happy to find (by chance) all the info below regarding my g grandfather. I'm not sure though if he served in WW1 or not. He was not listed on the Irish census for 1901, it looks as if he were away in the South African War at that point. How can I find more info and whether he served in WW1? On looking at the info on the War Graves page, I guess he didn't but then why was he buried in a War Grave?
I'm afraid I can only make use of fee free info and I'm very amateur!
I'd be grateful for any advice, thank you in advance.

It looks like he served in the Great War as part of the Royal Engineers.

Only ww1 and ww2 casualties are remembered on CWGC.

He was 40 so may not have served overseas have you looked for a medal card?

How do I go about trying to see any medical card, if one existed?

I searched the Medal Index Cards online at the National Archives documents online website but couldnt see your man listed which possibly means he never served overseas in ww1 he is buried in Lancashire so will have a death cert which may give his address at time of death.
He served in Boer War so should be somewhere on the medal rolls for that but finding his regiment may be difficult as he may not have served with Royal Engineers.
He MAY have a record on Find My Past pre 1915 ones

You have given me a lot to think about. I'll be trying to follow these up.
I'm still learning this genealogy lark and I get quite confused s'times!
I don't know if he served abroad or not in WW1. I wasn't aware he'd been in the South African War, I assume then he did go abroad.

He got around a bit, given his attestation location for WWI

The number WR/342924 was issued in March 1918 and the recipient discharged in 1919 he didnt serve overseas
So its a late issue number possibly home service only.

WR/342926 was issued to a 57 yr old!! Royal Engineers WR Construction Company who was classed as B2 Fit before been discharged.

Still cant find his Boer War Roll ?

The 4th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers were Militia - ie part-timers. The records found by Cati confirm this - being in WO96 rather than WO97.

His enlistment was before the Boer War. He would have signed up for six years service, consisting of 49 days 'training on enlistment', followed by annual trainings of 6 to 8 weeks. They were embodied (ie made full-time) from 2 May 1900 to 18 October 1900. The 4th Battalion do not appear to have served in South Africa. Again his WO96 papers would give details of any South Africa service, including a note that he was awarded a £5 war gratuity. If this is not recorded you can assume he did not take part in the Boer War.
