Samuel and/or Sampson Ren Middle Barton
« on: Thursday 29 December 11 11:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I'm trying to find parents for Samuel/Sampson Ren, Renn, Rann, Wren or Wrenn!

He was born about 1747 and had children in Middle Barton 1774 - 1789 according to the parish registers but no marriage or baptism recorded in Middle Barton for him.

I'm assuming Samuel & Sampson are one and the same as they are both shown as married to an Elizabeth, but who knows!

I suspect a neighbouring parish holds the key, later there was a Great Tew connection but no clues as to where to go earlier.

Any information to help my research would be fantastic and help to clear up the Samuel/Sampson question.

Happy New Year to you all.

Chris

Hi Chris.

I tried searching the OxFHS Marriage index, but found no marriages using the names provided.

In FamilySearch (IGI),  there are two more baptisms for Samuel & Elizabeth Ren @ Steeple Barton.  Ann(1782) & Elizabeth(1784).

Also, there is a 1763 baptism in St.Giles, Camberwell, London.  Jasper, son of Samuel Gottlieb Rehn & Elizabeth Rehn.

Thanks Steve,

Yes, that's 2 of his children, there are 4 others too!

Samuel would have been about 16 in 1763 so not impossible to have had a child but .........

Thanks again

Chris

My thoughts were, that Jasper was a much younger brother to Samuel/Sampson. :D

Hi
This is what I have found in the PR's at the Library for Steeple Barton so far (apparently Middle Barton isn't a parish)-

Ann Bapt 14/8/1774 dau Samual & Elizabeth REN - buried 15/12/1775
John Bapt 13/4/1777 son of Sampson & Elizabeth WREN
Mary Bapt 16/5/1779 dau of Samuel & Elizabeth REN
William Bapt 16/5/1780 son Sampson & Elizabeth RENN
Ann Bapt 5/5/1782 daU of Samuel & Elizabeth REN
Elizabeth Bapt 8/2/1784 dau of Samuel & Elizabeth REN
Robert Bapt 1/7/1787 son of Samuel & Elizabeth RANN
Thomas Bapt 4/12/1789 son of Samual & Elizabeth RENN

I did look for Samual/Sampson but nothing stood out for this parish

Hope this is of some help

There is a baptism of Samuel Rann(3 days old), son of Samuel & Elizabeth (of Mile End Old Town).   20 Aug 1747. @ St.Dunstan & All Saints, Stepney. Middlesex.  Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Occupation of father is labourer.

From the Ancestry site.

Thanks to you both,

Lottee, I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear I do have access to the Steeple Barton parish records, but it confirms the information I already have, there is also

Jane bapt 9 Apr 1776 dau Sampson & Elizabeth RENN

so that's 6 attributed to Samuel & 3 to Sampson, but spaced, I think, so they could all belong to the same parents.

Steve. :)

The date's right but what a coincidence that would be to marry someone the same name as your mother. Do you think given the transport in that era it's likely that a family would move from London to rural Oxfordshire?

I feel a trawl through the surrounding parish registers at Banbury library coming on  :)

All the best

Chris

London to Middle Barton, is roughly 40 - 50 miles, so hardly the ends of the earth, and is connected by a roman road 'Akeman Street' (the A41 today). ;D ;D

I have had relatives living in Buckinghamshire, and marrying in London, and returning home.  As for the coincidence of the name of mother.........no problems there either.

Obviously, you need to do more research, but at least it's a potential lead. ;)

I realize your post was a few years ago, but I am also researching Samuel/Sampson Ren of Middle Barton.  Did you find any more on him or his family please as I believe his daughter Mary is my ancestor?  I would also like to know if you have found any other historical groups in the Barton area other than Barton itself.
Many thanks
Pauline
