North British Railway Records - COMPLETED Thank you
« on: Thursday 29 December 11 21:14 GMT (UK) »
Am looking for the death record of my ancestor - James Anderson/ Andison - He worked on the North British Railway, he died when he was run over by a train. All I have to go on, is his widow remarried in 1922.The last census I have him alive on is 1901, I havent seen a 1911 scots census with him on yet, but presume he was alive until at least 1920s.
He lived and worked in Hawick, Roxburghshire, any ideas on where I can find these records, I keep running into a blank wall  ???
Any help will be gratefully appreciated

Happy Hunting

Carolyn  :)

There are 6 deaths for a James Anderson in Hawick betwen 1901 and 1922.  Any idea when he was born so I can narrow it down a bit for you?

Hi  :)

As Thisty says, a bit more information might help us to track him down for you. Was his wife's  maiden name Ellen Richardson?

Looks like  the right one ~

Marriage, Hawick 10th June 1897 James Anderson, Locomotive Fireman and Ellen Richardson.
Both down as 21 - so born circa 1876 if they were being truthful

Don't see them on the 1901 so far though - maybe a bad transcription  :-\

Ellen Anderson (nee Richardson), aged 46, widow,  then marries in Hawick in 1922

Does this help you narrow the list down, Thisty?

Found Ellen on the 1901 with her father, Thomas Richardson,  and siblings

Railway Cottage, Hawick
Ellen Anderson, 27 (?)*,  wife of a Railway Surfaceman, b. England
Grace Anderson, 14 months, b. Kelso

James is boarding in Larbert, Stirlingshire. He's down as aged 25 and a steam train driver.

As he travelled around, he might have died outwith Roxburghshire.

Carolyn - I know you have this but have put it up  so that others might have the info to help.

Added ~

*Ellen was 17 on the 1891 so she under reported  her age on her marriage cert.

James was 16 on the  1891 (born Castleton) -living with mother, Grace,  and stepfather, William Rice

Wow that was a quick reply,

Thanks Thisty and Gnu for your efforts, Yes you have pegged the right James Anderson.
Gnu you superstar, you have confirmed his mothers name, always suspected my nan was named after another family member. I didn't know she remarried either, so your ahead of me there xxxx
Still want to tie up the loose ends for James Anderson though. The records are out there somewhere :)

Happy Hunting and Happy New Year Everybody  :D

 :)

It got a bit late!

Just found them on the 1911. It looks as if James was dead by then, which narrows it down, especially as the youngest is only 1!

Can't read the address so will put it up as a snip!

12, Slitrig? Crescent - Com entry, Hawick

Helen Anderson, 35, wid, b. England
Grace, d, 11, b. Kelso
Thomas, s, 9, b. Stirlingshire, Larbert
Nellie, d, 7, b. -do-
William, s, 3, b. Edinburgh
Maggie Ann, 1, b. -do-

so he seems to have died 1909(at the latest) -1911 and maybe Edinburgh

Found his death in Edinburgh, St Giles - indexed as Andison:

28 December 1909, Edinburgh Infirmary, usual residence - 23 Albert Street. Aged 33 years. Railway Shunter.

Married to Ellen Richardson
Mother - Grace Andison, deceased
Cause - Chronic Supperation of Middle Ear. Septic Meningitis, 3 days. As certified by A Gibson, M.B.
Informant - Ellen Andison, widow (present) 23 Albert Street

So he didn't die in a railway accident.

Thank You Thank You Thank You Gnu, You Superstar  :D

I can't believe the years I have been told by the family, that he had been run over by a train! No wonder the railway records never came up with the goods! Let alone the hours put into it all  :o

Let that be a lesson to me, to really take all info with a pinch of salt until proven.

Thank You once again for putting me on the right track, I was in danger of getting the wrong parents too, no father seems to have been mentioned, so of I go again  ;D

Happy Hunting
