Where is this?? [COMPLETED] with thanks!!

Happy New Year to all.  This photo was sent to me of Ada & Alice, (right) two of my G/G/Aunts.  They lived in Chelsea so I guess the photo was taken not far away.

Any help greatly appreciated.

It looks a bit like a beach, especially as the lady on the right is holding a bucket and spade in her hand.

check the railing along the top of the promenade,slyle of lamposts and the flags...  not the exact location but probably further along the beach nearer the pier

Hi groom & jc26red, thanks, Oh .... same last name, "red"    <sorry>!!!! LOL

Yes I agree the lamp post are the same so most probably Brighton and the flags ... good spotting!!  I've done a google street view all along the Brighton beach and can't find similar buildings.  Perhaps they were knocked down in the name of progress.  I think the railings in my photo (I zoomed in) are lighter and vertical, with no appearance of the heavy cast iron in your URL.

I've requested by email, of the owner of the photo (a distant cousin in the UK), if there are any markings on the photograph that could help.  I await a reply. In the meantime an interesting way to spend NY's eve!!

Having had another look at the link I gave you I think I have it spot on. Bear in mind the link was taken c1890 and your photo is c1920 and from a different angle

See the first lampost is parallel to the start of the ramp from the beach up to the promenade - same in both photos

The lighter coloured building with the ballestrads to the right of the lampost is the same but looks to have had extensive work done on it, but the roof jas been re-done and lowered along with the chimney stack which has been removed at the top!  The house next door is low and has the same frontage on both photos, although the later photo has gabled roof line.
Remember, Brighton was a buzzing seaside resort then and would have had lots of make overs and updates to keep the visitors happy. Most of the seafront properties would have been hotels or B&Bs by the 1920s if not earlier!

The railings would have been repainted over the years and look like a lighter paint job but still the same cross pattern.

The London to Brighton train would have been a very easy trip for the ladies and was a very popular destination for Londoners.  Of course by 1920, they could also have gone by car or bus too.

Although the houses are gone, the aches are still there..

I'm convinced ...... and can now see the cross patten in the ballestrade.  Yes I think you have it.  The same position, I think I have on Google street view, (today) looks very different, which only shows how things change over time.

Google "Old Photos of Brighton in Sussex (Page 4) in England" then enlarge the photograph on the left titled Sussex, Brighton Beachfront circa 1890's. From a slightly different angle but is seems to be the same scene. I tried to trace the tea room in the background and thought it may be Wyatt's but had no success. Probably the party arrived by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway from Victoria Station in London, which is failrly near Chelsea. A slogan of the LB&SCR was "London to Brighton in one hour".

Nice site!  I think the etching at the top of the home page shows the layout the same as your photo just right of the green dot.
