China - You have helped me to rule out that this does not include my Gt Grandparents when they were children as the photo would be too late.

Wiggy - I think the children may be from different families as they seem to look different
The girl at the back look like the boy in front of her to her right. (They are dressed similarly with collars and buttons) and the little girl in the middle row far right - her eyes look quite different to the other children.

Do you know if it common to take to take photographs of all the neighbourhood children at that time.

Perhaps it is extended family that happens to be upper and lower class???

The clothes are a bit warm-looking for christmas in Australia.

It looks later than the early 1900s to me.

Could be the 1930s?

I would say, with the white collars, hair bows and 3/4 sleeves around 1905ish. Would that fit?

Oh yes, one of the toys looks like a teddy bear, which came out in 1902, so after 1902 :)

Cheers,
China

Trouble is, hair bows were still going in the 1950s.    Doesn't look like 1905, not really.   It's too casual.

Rebecca, is it possible to see the whole picture, or for you to describe it to us?  Is it stuck onto a heavy card, or does it have a postcard back, for example?  Preferably we'd like to see the whole thing, front and back, please :)

Hi

The informality of the photo and the style makes me think that it's about 10-15 years later - say 1915-1920 :

Quote
After 1910 colour was less restrictive and children wore a wide range of brighter colours which were much daintier than the gaudy new aniline colours of the mid Victorian era.  Patterned and gingham check fabrics replaced wispy muslins.

The yoke dropped to the waist and by 1914 dropped even further to the thighs for a few years.

Socks began to shorten to the ankle. The ribbon became a very important hair accessory to decorate the almost universal short hairstyle of girls around 1920.   Some ribbons were excessively wide at 6 or 5 inches wide and the need for a hat was eliminated as the head was decorated.

Children also began to wear knitted jerseys and knitted dresses a sign that the 20th century had really arrived.

The girl on the extreme right is wearing plimsole-type shoes - anyone know when these were adopted

I have this photo of my father and his sister - taken late 1916 England, very similar dress.

Could this group be an orphanage or similar? - they look too close in age to be even 2 families.

Must say I was wondering about the shoes for the girl on the right!

Been thinking -  My father was dressed in wide collars - sailor type usually  ::)  ;) - but Mum who was just a year younger wasn't -  You probably wouldn't have found them in the same group of children at that age though!!        But they would have been the age of the younger of these children at the end of the teens - early twenties so that seems more likely to me too - also the length of the clothes seem more likely to be later than 1900-10.     :-\

I'm still going with the date I gave earlier - 1915-1920s.

While browsing FindMyPast, I found this ever so useful blog, not a quick read but very good.

Jayne Shrimpton has written a few books. There might be something in there that would be useful, You'll need to scroll down mind:

And another thing - The wide collared girls dolls (I do think they are both dolls) are articulated while the girls on the left seem to have very stiff models - more like large peg dolls -

Could this have been a set up photo to show different classes of children of the era??  Can't think why but . . . .    :-\

The photo on that blog of children in 1905 looks much older doesn't it!
