Essex Newspapers
« on: Thursday 05 January 12 13:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm visiting family in Essex soon, and whilst there I am hoping to tie up some loose ends. I am hoping to go through family notices ie, obituaries and deaths in local newspapers such as the Standard and Evening Gazette for the dates 1919-1982. I shall be staying in Brightlingsea and wondered if anyone could advise me the nearest place to this that i could have access to the newspaper archives, whether it being a local library, Colchester or Chelmsford.

Thanks

I would say Essex Record Office at Chelmsford.
But I would give them a ring first to be sure - they will advise you of the best place
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

census information is Crown Copyright from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi,

I would contact the local library and Essex Record Office to check what newspapers archives they do have available.

The local history section at Colchester Library hold all these records but only has two reading machines. You have to book one in advance.

Colchester Library is the closest.

You can access all 19th century newspapers online if you have a library card.

These can be found on your local library website. They cover England/Wales/Scotland/Ireland up to 1900.

Hi There
You will find all those papers on film at the Colchester Public Library in the Local Study Dept on the first floor
You can phone and book a session or go early in the day when it is quiet and you can usually get  whatever you need Old Maps of the area are available and all the Poll books
They have all the parish records etc on fiche and census as well as the papers and monumental inscriptions too if you know the parish
I am sure you will be more than pleased
Happy Hunting
Ronnie :D :D

Thankyou everyone for your replies. I have spoken to my dad and he mentioned Colchester library. Regarding the reading machines, if i turn up early or book, how long do you get at a machine? I'm not really bothered about parish records as i have the 12 month sub on SEAX, but never using fiches before i don't know what to expect.

Thanks

You ask for how long you want. If you book far enough in advance there should be no problem. They are very popular though. I have never been in there and seen them idle.
