Daniel Duff, Coolure
« on: Friday 06 January 12 12:06 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the Duff family from Coolure. Daniel Duff was married to Bridget Boyhan or Broughan and had one daughter Catherine (Kate) b. Nov. 11 1849.  It appears they also had 2 sons, William b. July 9 1834 and Patrick, b. Jan 11 1832 although the surname for both is Duffe on parish records.  Daniel was a "servant" I assume in Coolure House.
Can anyone shed any further light on this family?

Wow what a great resource. I did not know Griffiths was digitised. The last one on the list is the man in question.  I had an idea he was a trusted servant of Sir Richard Pakeham (he was a British diplomat who negotiated the boundaries of some US States).  Is there anyway of gaining access to the Pakenham papers?

I think the Pakenham records originals are probably still in Tullynally, and copied to the National Library of Ireland, or the other way around.

With regard to the valuations, you might look at the maps on that link, and see if the 7 plots are adjacent.

For Townlands atlas.
There may be related people living close to each other, and D Duff may or may not  have been one man leasing two plots.
Coolure Hse is still standing:

long way down the page.
Still Duffs in the area in 1901/1911

Ok, I need help.  After continuously drawing a complete blank on this family save for the fact that he was listed as a sevant in Coolure house,  I have discovered a discrepency in the records.  The enumerator of the Census, Constable Stephen Cummins, listed Faughalstown, Westmeath as in the PLU of Delvin and not Granard.  Is there a Faughalstown in Delvin?
On further investigation, I saw a very interesting and promising House and building return.

How can I identify the location of these houses?
Sorry if I am missing something, I have a tendency to look at the tree and fail to see the forest.  :)

The townland Index (1851) has the townland of Faughalstown in the PLU/District of Castletowndelvin, which is the old name for Delvin, it's in the same district as Delvin on an index from 1901.

Granard district has a border with Delvin, and is to the north west.

What is the Granard reference you mentioned from ?

The census returns will not give you the location of each house, just the name of the townland, DED etc. The townland of Faughalstown is much nearer to Castlepollard than Delvin - about 8km south, and beside Lough Derravarragh. See :

   Faughalstown townland  (OSI map, c1837)

Hi shanew147,
I am very familiar with Faughalstown south of Castlepollard.  Most of my family come from this area and were all registered (when records began mid 1800's) in Granard.  I have always searched under Granard. Even The Poor Law Union district for this area was given as Granard.  Delvin is on the other side of the county near the Meath border.  Perhaps in the olden days the area was part of Delvin as you say, but I have now two branches of the family listed in addresses such as "Residents of a house 3 in Faughalstown (Faughalstown, Westmeath)".  I have discovered one house location and can identify it, but the record on the Duffs has me stumped.
