Marriage of James Atkin, Spalding Mariner
« on: Sunday 08 January 12 09:28 GMT (UK) »
Researching the Atkin family who were Mariners in Spalding. Can't seem to find the marriage of James a son of Robert & Sarah, Baptised on 21-01-1849. I think he was the father of Fredrick Edwin 30-07-1874 & Ernest Arthur 30-06-1879. Can anyone find his wife's maiden name and date of marriage please. She may have been Rebecca?

Thanks Geoff & Cathy. I have found a marriage for James & Elizabeth Osborn then somewhere a Rebecca was found which was confusing. The one I am looking for now is James Charles who is the Jas C age 3 in 1861 census. Who & when did he marry? If you can find this I would be most grateful.

He was on  the "John" in Pontefract in 1891 (married)

with Mate Thomas T ATKIN 35 (married)

1901 in Rye (Sussex) on "Fern"

Marriages Mar 1882
ASHWELL    Lucilla        Spalding    7a   478
ATKIN    James Charles         Spalding    7a   478
TAGG    Harriett         Spalding    7a   478
YEARDYE    John         Spalding    7a   478

I can see a Harriet ATKIN 32 in 1891 with a TAGG sister as a servant. :)

I have found the vessel "John" previously myself in 1891. If he is the Master age around 33 and the Mate Thomas T is 35 I wonder what relations are they. The "Fern" was one of the last sailing vessels to trade out of Spalding and he built a cottage and named it "Fern Cottage" in Albert Street and it is still there today.

Thanks Geoff & Cathy. I have found a marriage for James & Elizabeth Osborn then somewhere a Rebecca was found which was confusing.

28 Sept 1853 Spalding
James ATKIN (son of John) to Elizabeth OSBORN (dau of Joseph)

Of course if Elizabeth died (as she did in 1860?), it was not a legal option to have married her sister - so they went to Norfolk to do it.

I'm having trouble finding Thomas ATKIN - I think in 1891 he was actually Thomas Tot. ATKIN which makes very little sense to me. ???

Geoff, I have now found children of James C & Rebecca, daughters Martha Jane (1864) Francis Sarah (1865) & sons Fredrick Edwin (1874) & Ernest Arthur (1879) Thomas (Tot is nickname I have heard of) as short for Thomas. I know of one other local Thomas (Tot) Unfortunately I am unable to find out this Tot Atkin's parents.
