MI's Lilliesleaf, does anyone have access?
« on: Sunday 08 January 12 23:27 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to get the death cert for my 3g grandmother Frances Ann Hall with no success at all.

My 3 g grandparents were William Burn b1819 Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire and Frances Ann Hall b 1824 Inch, Wigtownshire.

William, Blacksmith in Lilliesleaf died aged 83 on 21/8/1902, buried Lilliesleaf. His wife Frances (Fanny) died later (his death cert states married to Frances Ann Hall)

I have been to Lilliesleaf churchyard but no grave stone that I could see. My nana's cousin who passed away aged 90 a few years ago said there was a stone but it had fallen face down (and there were a few).

Cousin of nana also said Fanny had walked/fallen into River Tweed and drowned/suicide??  I cannot understand why I can't find her death cert!! I've looked from 1881 (she is on this census) til 1930 on SP, bought one or two certs but no luck.

If anyone can help with the MI inscription I would be very grateful...  many thanks in advance.

Hello Terry

Borders Family History Society recorded the Lilliesleaf MI last year.  We made several visits to record all of the stones and I can understand how you may not have found what you were looking for - although, the churchyard is relatively well looked after, there are quite a few stones which have fallen over.    There is however, a stone for William Burn died 21.8.1902 and Frances A Y Hall died 12.10.1903.

If the story of her death is correct, it might be worth looking at the local newspapers.

There seems to have been several Burns who were smiths in Lilliesleaf and neighbouring villages.

Hi Elma,

Many, many, thanks for this information. I will now go back to SP and see what I can find. I think a trip to Hawick might help with the newspapers.

All the Burn families in and around Lilliesleaf are mine, they were mainly blacksmiths.

Once again thank you it's very much appreciated.
