SS Demarara
« on: Tuesday 10 January 12 14:20 GMT (UK) »
hi, my great great grandfather died on board SS Demarara out of Liverpool in 1882. I have just found out that his brother-in-law was on this ship in 1887 when she was lost without trace en route from Liverpool to Gibralter.

There are a couple of ships of this name but I am referring to the Cunard one built in Glasgow and sailing out of Liverpool.

I am intrigued about what happened to her. Was the wreck ever found in more recent times? is these a list of all who were on board (39 crew and 2 passengers). I have found a wreck report dated 1888 which describes the circumstances around her loss but would love to know more.

Scotland's People have a will for a John C Roughead, Merchant listed as D.29.12.1887, being lost with the SS Demerara on a voyage from Liverpool to Gibralter. Couple more details here: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jswatson&id=P2779889204
The will is also on Ancestry.

Two more crew here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~econnolly/register/regi1887.html

http://www.authorama.com/gold-coast-for-gold-3.html - is an account of the voyage onboard the "cunard SS Demerara" in 1881 - interesting as it shows the "cunard" route.

It also appears that Sir Walter Raleigh sailed on this same boat in 1883.

There should be a  last Crew agreement for DEMERARA official number 68003
Held at MUN
http://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/viewcombinedcrews.php?Official_No=68003
This would not include passengers. I think the cost is $40 Canadian. I note that a kind soul has offered to do a look up at MUN for someone else.

May be worth a PM.

The Times reported the DEMERARA missing on 16th Feb 1888 gave the masters name as Tutt. A typo methinks
