David Little - c.1818
« on: Wednesday 11 January 12 12:37 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to find any info on a David Little. I have reason to think he may have been born c. 1818 in Melrose.

He may have joined the Royal Artillery as a gunner and driver in 1834.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

According to new information, it seems he may have been born in 1835 in Edinburgh.

Hi ev,

I don't know much at all. He was a gunner/driver in the Royal Artillery. I know he married Elizabeth Tunnicliffe in Pietermaritzburg in 1855. They had a least 1 child, Robert Aron Little.

David received a South African medal for service in the Anglo Boer War in 1853. Seems he was in 4th company, 5th battalion during 1850 - 1853 in South Africa.

He may have been a private in the Rand Rifles after that.

He died in 1906 and is buried in Commercial Road Cemetery, Pietermaritzburg.

Thanks ev!

So that could be him, even if he lived and died in South Africa?

That's great, thank you for all your help!

Yes , not all Chelsea pensioners were based in London
I believe that people travelled the country handing out pensions to ex-soldiers every 6 months or so
Not sure what the overseas arrangements would have been
If you haven't done so already it might be worth a post on the armed forces board detailing his military service  :-\
