Old parish registers
« on: Wednesday 11 January 12 22:40 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Sorry if this has been asked before but for Scotland deaths pre 1855, is there any way I can find out a cause of death?  I have found a few parish burial records for some of my ancestors but I can't seem to find out their cause of death pre 1855.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Anya

Oh, by the way, it's the coldstream area I'm interested in - I don't know if it was up to the parish what they recorded and in my case they may not have recorded cause of death or if there is another place I should be looking for cause of death in my coldstream ancestors pre 1855!

Ta!

pre 1855 its rare dependant to recorder and records are incomplete - generally death records are mainly burial records and the recorder would probably not know the cause, because there bases on the old parish registers.

Hi Anya,

One of the few places you'll find a pre 1855 cause of death are the records of the Kelso dispensary. Whilst the dispensary was in Kelso it had patients all over the Borders. I have begun transcribing and the first year is available here: http://tinyurl.com/8y36egk. It may take me a while to transcribe the rest so if you give me the name and date I’m more than happy to have a quick look for you.

Thanks Emma - I'm going to keep an eye on your site.  There are quite a few people that I'm interested in, a few too many to ask you to check, but if you did come across any mention of the surname 'Tear' or 'Weatherson/Weatherston' I would be grateful of any information.

Thanks

Anya

Emma

What a fantastic site,  I shall keep coming back to it. Thank you for undertaking such an enormous task which will certainly be a great help to all those with ancestral connections in the Borders. Best wishes

Maureen :) :) :)
