Hi
I am trying to find one of my ancestors on the 1891 census and the 1861 census.
This is what I have:
My 2xggrandfather is Alfred TOMPKINS. I have his birth cert (1868, Middlesex).
This is not the Alfred I am looking for, it is his father.
On Alfred (junior);s birth cert, it states fathers name Alfred TOMPKINS and mother is Sarah Tompkins (formerly Cook). Father occupation - Lather?
I had no trouble finding them in the 1881 census (not sure exactly what info to put to direct someone) Alfred and Sarah TOMKINS living with their children Alfred 13, Richard 9 and Alice 6.
So the name spelling has changed!!
In the 1871 census I could not find them and a kind person on rootschat helped (some time ago) to find that they were probably listed as Alfred and Sarah Johnson (some sort of error??)
The reason is they have Alfred who is 3 and live next door to a Thomas and Sarah Cook who I suspect are 'my Sarah's' parents. On Alfred and Sarah's wedding cert, her father is Thomas with same occupation as this census. Also in 1861 they had a daughter called Sarah the correct age.
However I am looking to find Alfred (senior) in 1891 but to no avail.
Incidently on the wedding cert he is Alfred TOMKINS.
Alfred Junior in 1891 is living in a police station and in 1901 is with his family but he died in 1902.
I also want to find Alfred senior on the 1861 census. His father is William TOMKINS (Tompkins) Tradesman.
Alfred senior was born c.1844 probably in Kensington/Middlesex
Doing a search in 1901 comes up with an Alfred (senior) about the right age living with a nephew - maybe this is him, and then potentially in 1911 an Alfred of the correct age in an institution.
Anyone any ideas that would help.
much appreciation
Sara
