Thank you all for your input. As often happens, having other people look at a problem from different viewpoints helps immeasurably.

Some of the things you have brought up I simply did not think of, having got a little one tracked::)

I have a possible marriage with Ann being about 18 when married, Ann Johnson bn 1799, so quite possible.

He married in 1864 at Colchester where he was posted in 1858 as a soldier. I have a copy of the marriage certificate, and copies of his enlistment. The 1861 census has him at Colchester barracks.

As I have only recently found Ann, I have not yet followed her after 1841, but will do so as soom as practicable.

Again, thanks to all for your help.

I have his baptismal register as at Holy Trinity, Chester, and all the census from 1861 to 1911 have his birthplace as Chester.
Just have to find the 1851.

Did you check out post#4

Hi

Looking at the 1851 census it would appear that Ann Chesters age 48 was born in Chester and was unmarried.

I have now found a resume of the baptism on this site
http://www
.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb/
at the time of the baptism the family were living at Crane Street Chester, fathers occupation desc as 'post boy'

The 1841 census is also Crane Street albeit it is designated New Crane Street so likely to be the correct family. You appear to have Grand father / father in law: dau in law: grandson:

Maybe Ann misunderstood the difference between stating she was a widow and unmarried on the 1851 census return!

There is an army record at TNA WO12 4926 for George Chesters, no 500 Private  64th Foot ( Cumberland) Colchester

Thank you all for all the information you have provided ;D

I think from all that, that I now have enough to be fairly confident that all I need to follow up now is the Army career which elzabels has discovered. How I go about that from Australia i am not sure of at this moment but will sort out shortly.

Again, thanks to all you generous Rootschatters, with your time and expertise.

Don't know if this will help any -  could this be Ann CHESTER's baptism?

Apologies if these questions have been answered - from info. you have given he married Sarah Durrant

Was his father named on the marriage certificate?
What was his father's occupation?
Who were the witnesses to the marriage?
