John/William McGuirk, Boer War??
« on: Saturday 14 January 12 11:54 GMT (UK) »
Rootschat members have been invaluable assistance with tracing WW1 details of my grandfather and three of his brothers- all Dublin Fusiliers. I have reached a dead end with the two remaining brothers. These are John McGuirk born Blackrock Co Dublin 2 May 1873 and William born Blackrock 9 Dec 1887. A cousin mentioned that one went to South Africa - Boer War? Where should I start?

There are a number of J McGuirks on the KSA/QSA Medal Rolls for Boer War.(Ancestry)
However you would have to see if Find My Past have service records pre 1915 surviving to try and marry service numbers up.
I dont have subs to FindMyPast.

Hi John joined the Royal Irish Regiment in 1891 at Clonmel.
He was in India and South Africa,,but just missed the Boer War.
Recieved the India medal 1895 with clasp for Punjab and the Frontier medal 1897.
There is also a militia record for a William McGuirk born Blackrock,,,joined the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.
Both these records are on Findmypast.  ;)

After many years of not doing much research on this William McGuirk a family member tumbled on a note in some old family stuff today. Apparently William McGuirk is William Bernard McGuirk. On 11 March 1904 he joined the British Navy giving his date of birth as 5 March 1886. He was actually born 9 December 1887. His number was 306172. He was a stoker on HMS Vivid and appears to have died on 12 August 1905. The piece of paper found says DD and the date and I think that means discharged dead! Sad end for a boy/man who seemed to be anxious to serve in the Navy.

He died aboard hospital ship "Maine" whilst under anaesthetic prior to having an operation for a cerebral abscess.
