Mary Josephine Fitzgerald
« on: Sunday 15 January 12 13:24 GMT (UK) »
Mary Josephine Fitzgerald was my great-great-aunt, and I'm intrigued to know what happened to her. She turned up on the 1901 census, aged 19, but she wasn't on the 1911 census. I know she most likely got married, but I'd love to know what happened to her. She lived at 173, Great Brunswick Street (now Pearse Street) in 1901.

If anyone finds anything, the help would be greatly appreciated, since I want to know did she just move out, did she get married, or did she die. On the 1911 census Thomas and Lucinda were listed as having had 14 children, but that only 11 were still alive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There doesn't seem to be a likely death or marriage for Mary Josephine on the BMD index in the Dublin area - but it's possible that she was recorded without her middle name.

Hi,

I may be able to help on this one.  I'm researching the Fitzgerald family also.

Information I have to date on Mary Josephine Fitzgerald as follows:

She married Joseph McDermott - in 1904
Source: www.familysearch.org
ref: Dublin South
Apr/Jun 1904
Volume: 2
P. 681

She is listed on Census 1911 under the name McDermott of 12 Mark Street (Trinity ward).
is at home with husband and 4 children.

In 1921 Mary Josephine McDermott(nee Fitzgerald) identified the body of her younger brother Leo Fitzgerald who was shot and died in Great Brunswick Street on14.03.1921
Source: irishnewspaperarchives.com
Paper: Irish Independent 1905 - current
Article: "Inquiries and funerals'  dated: 18.03.1921

The other query regarding the 3 missing children of Thomas Fitzgerald & Lucinda Doolin (Lucinda is my connection) I may also be able to help.

Joseph, Elizabeth & Patrick born 21.03.1897
death refs for all three: www.familysearch.org
Apr/Jun 1897
Dublin South
Volume 2
Page: 496

they are buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in family plot: St. Bridgets  JH 260.5
That's it if I find anything else I'll post it here
Forgive the lack of direct links - I'm new at this.

Regards
B.

I can add the information that Mary Fitzgerald must have been very proud of her family. For one thing, she named her son after her brother, Theobald Wolfe Tone Fitzgerald! Her son, Wolfe Tone (known as Tone) McDermott was my grandfather... Theobald and Joe (Joseph) McDermott, Mary's husband were together at Boland's Mills... pity more of the women's stories are so hidden in these searches/histories - Mary's identification of her young dead brother must have been hugely traumatic & Sheila Fitzgerald is also a veteran of 1916. Family lore tells it that Leo was killed on his 21st birthday.

Hi Ruth & Nessa

Leo was born on 12.03.1893 - I have a copy of his birth certificate.  So that would make him 28 yrs old when he died (14.03.1921)    I haven't been able to find his official death cert in GRO indexes - it may have been a very late registration.  If anyone can help on that would be much appreciated.  Leo is buried in Glasnevin - south Chapel ref no: 368570

Your grandfather Theobald McDermott - was he born in 1913?  I only have the children that Mary Josephine Fitzgerald/McDermott listed on Census 1911.

Lucinda Doolin/Fitzgerald was my great aunt.  My great grandfather James Doolin was Lucinda Doolin/Fitzgerald's brother.  James & his wife Mary Jane Fitzpatrick/Doolin were witnesses for marriage of Lucinda Doolin & Thomas J. Fitzgerald on 1st June 1881.

So that would make us some form of cousins.  I think Lucinda Doolin/Fitzgerald is your great great grandmother?
I would be interested in any other info you may have on this family.

B.

Hi Tara,

Excellent work on the death record. That must be it.  Next time I'm in GRO I'll get it.

Thanks again.

What a proud family history,i have just been reading all about the Fitzgeralds family and the part they played between 1916 and 1922 on the new military pension site, mentions Sheila/Julia and other brothers that took part.
