M. Brettle
« on: Wednesday 18 January 12 00:22 GMT (UK) »
My father a u.s. soldier stayed with a family Brettle in Southport for a time during WWII.  My aunt believes she corresponded with a Mary Brettle during that time . Anyone know where I can find info U.S. Soldiers living with British families during WWII?

Hullo and welcome to rootschat. :)

Your ask is a tall one ;D ;D

If your aunt could remember a bit more of the address, even the street name, there could be a possibility that the electoral rolls would show wholived at that address in WW2.

Any possibility of some more info such as this?

Remembering her name Maria  is a start.

If you were to just get her chatting about "those days"do you thinkit might jog her memory?  You never know your luck ;D

Correct, but one cpuld look at the two electoral rolls closest on either side of the war period.
In the absence of any other way to go, thiswould seem an off chance.

Hi,

Looking in the "British Phone Books, 1880-1984" at Ancestry I found in 1940, 1942, 1944, 1945 onwards.

BRETTLE F.H.  46 Beresford Drive,  Southport,    87449

He seems to stay at this address until 1972, then moves to,

BRETTLE F.H.  36 Norwood Avenue, Churchtown,  Southport,    85511

until at least 1983.

Possible deaths,

Frederick Harold BRETTLE    Oct 1990    Sefton North    37  252
Birth Date: 16 Dec 1906

Marie BRETTLE    Oct 1993     Sefton North
29 Mar 1910
Register number: 39B
District and Subdistrict: 0341B
Entry number: 132

Sefton North would be the correct registration district for Southport.

Regards,
Daisy

I know this is an old message but I believe M. Brettle was my husband's grandmother.  We lived at 36 Norward Ave., Southport from 1983-1988 with them and have fond memories of them.  Her Grandsons are my sons and we live in Fayetteville, Arkansas.  If we can be of any help, please let me know.  Her name was Marie Brettle, her daughter was Marie (they both could have been known as Maria at times..) My mother in law was Fred and Marie's daughter and was born around 1933.  She sadly passed away about 8 years ago.
