Caroline Murray born in Bombay
« on: Wednesday 18 January 12 10:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm looking for any information for a Caroline and Elizabeth Murray born in Bombay whilst their father served with the East India Army.   Caroline born in 1849 and Elizabeth in 1851.  Elizabeth married Thomas Buchanan and came to live in Liverpool where her father originally came from.  I can find Elizabeth with Thomas in the 1881 census and Caroline is staying with them.  Any help would be hugely appreciated.
thanks Kay

Have you tried Families in British India Society?
www.new.fibis.org

Came across this from the Bombay Times:

Edition 14th October 1851
Murray, Elizabeth Ann born at Agra, 5th October 1851
to Dr and Mrs John Murray
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Thanks for that.  We have tried the British India site but the Bombay Times is really interesting. I'll have to follow that one up.  Thanks so much

Having looked further at Elizabeth I can't see any evidence that she claimed to have been born in Bombay (in contrast to her sister Caroline).

1871 census: Shows Elizabeth (21 b East Indies) married to Thomas BUCHANAN (22 b Liverpool) in Toxteth Park with sister Caroline (22 b Bombay East Indies). RG10/3799/80/41.

1881 census: I cannot easily find them.

1891 census: BUCHANAN family in Toxteth Park; Elizabeth aged 36 and born "Point de Gall, India" - this is in modern Sri Lanka. RG12/2931/95/15.

1901 census: Elizabeth BUCHANAN (now widowed) in Toxteth Park aged 46 and born "India". RG13/3430/11/13.

When and where did the Thomas BUCHANAN/Elizabeth MURRAY marriage take place, and what details were given as to Elizabeth's father's name and occupation?

Elizabeth married Thomas Buchanan and came to live in Liverpool where her father originally came from.

Hello again Kay

It looks as though you already know the identity and origins of Elizabeth's (and presumably Caroline's) father - can you tell us exactly what information you are looking for and all the information you already have so that we don't spend time reinventing the wheel?

Hi

Such a lot of help.  Really grateful.  The problem with Caroline and Elizabeth is that we can't find their marriages either.
Caroline married (supposedly) Robert Ralph and their daughter is Caroline Ralph born 1879 in Liverpool.  We can't find a certificate for that marriage or for the one between Elizabeth and Thomas.
There's also no trace of children for Elizabeth and Thomas.
There is a suggestion that the father of Caroline and Elizabeth may have married an Indian girl.
Robert Ralph was born in Liverpool to Charles Ralph of Bangor, Wales and his wife Ann.

many thanks.

I see that Caroline RALPH received a Catholic burial in 1907 - if she was born a Catholic that may be of relevance to identifying sources for further information about the family.

See my reply#5 - is it right that you already know the identity of Caroline & Elizabeth's father? Also what is the source for the information in your original post that he was in the East India Army?

Hi again

Caroline Ralph was born C of E however her daughter converted to catholicism on her marriage and Caroline may also have converted at a later date.  We don't have the first name for Caroline and Elizabeth's father and it's only through family stories that it's believed he was in the army at the time of the Indian uprising.  I have tried to find Thomas Buchanan to see if I could get to the family through that line but haven't had any success there either.  This is a brickwall that has plagued the family for a very long time.

thanks

Karen
