Manchester Union Workhouse 1841
« on: Wednesday 18 January 12 23:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Wonder if anyone could assist me please, I am looking for more records on a Judith Ellison who is shown in 1841 census as living in the Manchester Union Workhouse, working as a Spinner.

It seems that her husband was a Private in the 59th Regiment of Foot at Portsmouth, and at this time in 1841 she would have had two daughters, Harriett b. Manchester aged 11 years and Maria b. 1836 at Portsmouth, who would then have been only 5 years of age.     Her husband Lawrence Ellison first joined the Regiment in 1830.   Was posted to Ireland after Manchester, then later to Portsmouth.

If we could find Workhouse records in more detail, we might be able to determine what happened to her two younger children. Cannot find them at all on Census information for 1841, found Harriett in 1851, but nothing more on Maria.

The 1841 Judith was aged 40 and shown as born in county

There is a Judith Ellison on the 1851 for Manchester shown as born Cheshire and aged 51.  She is unmarried - not widowed

1861 b Stockport Cheshire and a widow

1871 b Manchester and a widow

1881 - Manchester and widowed

Her birthyear is consistent at 1800/1801 and on no census does she appear with any children

Hi Carole,
Yes, sorry about the duplication, and since the original posting, we have found that Judith Ellison's husband Lawrence, was a Soldier, not a Publican, it was the wrong transcript on the marriage certificate that I got for the marriage of her daughter Sarah in 1845.  Discovered this after seeing a copy of the marriage certificate on Family Search website.

Yes and Lawrence Ellison died shortly before Sarah's marriage.  He died in Portsmouth in June 1845.

So why Judith is shown as unmarried in 1841 census is strange, lots of things happened in her life apparently, as it seems that Lawrence Ellison had another child named James Gore (Mother Ellen Gore, Father Lawrence Ellison), so I think Judith must have had some difficult days with her husband's philandering.   It seems that Lawrence was all over the place from 1830 Manchester to Ireland, then Malta, and later West Indies, in between based at Portsmouth.

Thanks for the website you've given me, will check this out.
