Lamberts of Sudbury
« on: Thursday 19 January 12 13:58 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the birth or parents of a Rose Mary Lambert.  She married James Harry Frost in 1905 in Plumstead St Mary London.  The marriage record says that her father was named George William Lambert an Engine Driver.
She appears in the 1901 census in Croyden as a Domestic Servant to the Jackson family and she claimed to have been born in Ludbury - I believe a transcription error and should read Sudbury Suffolk.
Can anyone help please?

Sue

This might be them:

1881 Living Erith, Kent
George LAMBERT c1854 born Sudbury
Elizabeth wife 24 born Glemsford
Florence 4 born Colchester, Essex
Bertie 6mths

1891 living Plumstead
George W LAMBERT 36 c1856 born Sudbury  (transcribed as Lambeth on An**) but not an engine driver - sawyer.
Elizabeth 33  b Glemsford
Florence 13  b Colchester
Bertie 10  b Erith
Mary Ann 5 born Sudbury
George 1 b Colchester

A long shot but I wonder if she used the name Rose Mary instead of Mary Ann.  Using FreeBMD I cannot find the birth reg of a Rose Lambert between 1880 - 85 anywhere but I did find a Mary Jane Lambert Dec qtr 1885 Sudbury 4a/626.

Hello,
Thank you so much for looking for me.  I too found this family and wondered if it could be them.  I cannot find a birth record for a Rose Mary Lambert either which makes me think that she changed her name.
It is difficult with George as well as by 1905 he may well have changed his work.
There is another name on the marriage record - a witness named Bert George Lambert which led me to another Suffolk family.  The Albert Lambert born 1879 and his father George William Lambert were from Ipswich in Suffolk.
I don't think I have ever had so much trouble finding someone.  Every record seems impossible to put together.
I do appreciate you trying.

The witness' name may be useful

The birth of Bertie age 4mths in 1881 was registered Dec Qtr 1880 Dartford RD, which inc Erith, 2a/412 - Bertie George R Lambert.  Bert George Lambert possibly?

I found Rose and James in 1911 in Plumstead her birth is definitely given as Sudbury Suffolk. I have checked Free Reg and other sites and none of them have any transcriptions for that part of Suffolk yet.

Hi again,

You are one step ahead of me.  After your reply I looked again and found that there was a Bertie, my next step was going to be to look for his birth record then one that might fit Rose in that area.
Its looking good because the marriage record said Bert George!

Sue
Thanks again

Hi, Rose Lambert was my grandmother. She certainly was an enigma!!
She was as born as Mary Jane on 8 Oct 1885 in Sudbury to George William Lambert and Elizabeth (Pearman)
I got very excited when I found out that George Lambert was an engine driver, as that was my profession. But I think that anyone who operated heavy steam driven machinery (in the census he was a sawyer) was called an engine driver.
At some point she appears to have changed her name to Rose Mary

She married my Grandad James Harry Frost on 23 Dec 1905
She died on 18 Jan 1976.

She was always known as Rose yet on her gravestone she is once again Mary Jane Frost
Hope this helps
