Toler Roberts Garvey and George B. Garvey
« on: Saturday 21 January 12 15:08 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm looking for some basic biographical information on two early Irish lawn tennis players from King's County (Offaly), the brothers Toler Roberts Garvey and George B. Garvey. They played lawn tennis in the 1880s. I believe both of them were from Parsonstown (Birr), but don't have a date and place of birth for either of them. I'm also looking for a date and place of death for both of them.

Any help would be appreciated.

possibly Toler jnr's birth from the extracted records :

  Name: [male] Garvey
  Birth date: 11 Feb 1865
  Birthplace: Parsonstown, Kings Co.
  Ref. : 681
Parents : Toler Robert Garvey & Amelia Jane Elizabeth Cox
see : link

there's another male birth to the same parents the year before - link

here's Toler jnr in 1911 - married, but still no sign of his wife...

   Garvey household, Birr rural

there's a good match for the daughter's birth on the BMD Index :

  Name: Inez Garvey
  Registration district:   Parsonstown
  Event type: Birth
Quarter and year: Jul - Sep 1899
  Volume: 3 / Page: 424

Hi, Shane,

Thanks very much for that helpful information. There's a George Bloomfield Garvey in the 1911 Census; I believe he's Toler's elder brother. George gives his occupation as civil engineer, M.E., T.C.D.

I don't have an exact date of death for either brother. Toler appears to have died in Birr. The Toler Roberts Garvey who died in Nenagh in 1914 was probably their father.

"The Kings County Directory, 1890" has a lot of information about the family.  An original copy is to be found at the NLI, or you can get it on CD from Eneclann.
It seems Toler's grandfather, Captain George Garvey a retired Navy captain, bought Thornvale House in the 1820s.  His wife's uncle, Major Pepper, lived nearby.  George Garvey died in 1879 & his son Toler R. inherited.

Toler married Amelia Cox, of Gloucestershire, and they had three sons: George, Toler R., and Henry, and three daughters.  George and Henry graduated from TCD.  George worked as an electrical engineer and Toler R worked as a land agent with his father.

There is a brief description of the Garvey family's military tradition in previous generations.

There is a burial in Surrey in 1925 according to FamilySearch:

Could this be he?
