Robert Rutherfords Bith and Death
« on: Sunday 22 January 12 13:28 GMT (UK) »
Robert Henry Rutherford (my Grandad) was born on the 2nd of January 1885 and died on the 28th December 1962 aged 77, in Hull, he married my Grandma Florence Henrietta Govier in 1919, Florence was born on the 5th of November yr unknown and died on the 13th Jan 1939.   Roberts father was William Rutherford born 1846 in Edingburg (my Great Grandfather), who then came to Hull, as far as it states William married Sarah Probert?

We are trying to see if we can get further back from William and Sarah and taking it williams Father and mother would have lived in Edingburg, William was smuggled from Edingburg to Glasgow and then boarded a ship to Hull, where our family have lived ever since.  We would also like to find more out about Florence all we know is that she came from Germany and her Father was called Walter Govier and her Brother was called Walter Albert Govier?

Robert and Florence had 3 children, William Wallace Rutherford, Elizabeth Rutherford (Betty) and Rose Rutherford who was my Mother.

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

It looks like Florence Henrietta Govier was born in the December Quarter of 1886 in Sculcoates (Hull).

Florence was the daughter of Walter Govier and in 1901 they are all living in Hull, but it doesn't look like that generation was the german connection (how sure are you about a german connection?)

1901 census @ 18 Gibson Street, Hull (RG13 4495 116 21)

Walter Govier, Head, 39,  (something) Grinder, born Pirbright, Surrey
Florence M Govier, Wife, 37 born Dover, Kent
Florence H Govier, Dau, 14, born Hull
John Govier, Son, 13, born Hull
Walter Govier, Son, 8, born Hull
Emma Govier, Dau, 6, born Smethwick (?), Birmingham
Bengham Govier, Son, 3, born Hull (this must be Benjamin Govier)
Grace Govier, Dau, 9m, born Hull

William was smuggled from Edingburg to Glasgow and then boarded a ship to Hull, where our family have lived ever since.

Why smuggled?

And much easier to get from Edinburgh to Hull, than from Glasgow!
Edinburgh and Hull are both ports on the east of Britain - Glasgow is on the west. ;D

There were also 2 more Govier girls - Grace Mary (June Q 1903) and Lottie (June Q 1906) both in Sculcoates.

The eldest son John was christened at St Barnabas, Bethnal Green, London on 28 February 1888 when the family were living at 247 Old Ford Road and the father was working as a Collar Maker

There is no mother on the 1881 with Walter though, maybe she could be the German connection?

Nope! according to the 1871 census she was Henrietta and born in Oxfordshire.  Will edit with transcript

the family are actually down as Gobien and the ages are a bit off, but they are they are the right people:

1871 @ 28 Brigham Terrace, Hull (RG10 4793 172 37)

John Gobien, Head, 44, Farmer's Labourer, born Tempelton, Devon
Henrietta Gobien, Wife, 31, born Bix (?), Oxford
Emma Gobien, Dau, 12, born New Cross, Surrey
John Gobien, Son, 11, born Bath, Somerset
Walter Gobien, Son, 9, born Purbright, Surrey
Ellen Gobien, Dau, 7, born Wincanton, Somerset
William Gobien, Son, 4, born Brentford, Middlesex
Mary A Gobien, Dau, 2, born Hull, Yorks

They didnt half travel.... :) ;D

going back 10 years, to 1861, John is missing but Henrietta is living with Emma and John Jnr in 4 Weston Grove, Weston, Somerset.  She is described as the wife of a butler so John Snr must be living in somewhere.  She has a brother Frank Elliott living with her who is 15.

There is a corresponding marriage between a John Govier and Henrietta Elliott in Kensington, London in June Q 1865 so they may not have married before they had their elder children
